It seems like a fished a millions hours today and couldn't find any fish. Started off fishing for walleyes this morning at 6am. Moved out a little deeper for crappies. Ended up moving 9 times throughout the day. Fished up by the the high lines fished south of the shanty town and all over inbetween anywhere from 20 to 40 feet. I figured the fish wouldnt be biting too good with the cold but I couldnt even find a school of them to start throwing lures at. Moved in shallower before dark and fished till 7pm. In all that time I ended up catchin a 15 inch sauger, 3 walleyes(all under 10 inches), a sturgeon, and only one crappie. Has it been this dead for everyone else??????

UWLeagle, you know what, it's been pretty slow since the day we had that fish fry on the ice!? Maybe the fish found out the sort of stuff we were up to and decided they didn't want to have any part of it? As you might have figured, I never made it out today. I traded fishing today for a go at it tomorrow... Work held me up and as you probably noticed, I'm a bit of a wuss when it comes to the cold. Hopefully the fish cooperate tomorrow and Friday.

Maybe we need to have another fish fry out there, it could have been good luck. I wish I could help you and tell you where to find some fish. I could give you a list of places where the fish arent though. It was cold out but there wasnt any wind so it didnt seem to bad. Wont be able to make it out tomorow but I think I can make it out Friday and Satruday and Sunday for sure.

How do you guys live so good. Fishing several times a week, must be nice!! Some of us have a chain that just won't seem to let go. Anyways maybe UW is right, time for another fish fry!! Problem is it sounds like we don't have any fish. Anyways hopefully tomorrow with this heat wave moving in sparks something down there. If nothing else it should be a decent day, (weather wise) to have a couple cold ones and wet a line. See you guys tomorrow.

I hope that post did not seem like i was complaining. I would rather fish all day long and not catch a thing than work or sit on the couch all day, so yes it was a good day. Was just stating the fishing was a little tough. And yes it is nice that I get to 3 or 4 times a week. My temporary job allows me to do this, don't know what I am going to do when I find a real job. Jason, couple of cold ones sounds good, haven't had a beer out their yet, maybe that'll be good luck along with a fish fry(if anyone has fish), worth a try.

Auggie- Yeah i let you catch all the mudpuppies last night. Thanks for taking that pic, I'll be out tomorow morning, same place or maybe a little bit south where that other guy was set up.

I was out there too yesterday... got set up by 7, outside of Bayport. Not much action, missed five hits and landed one crappie. Another guy landed a nice 18" sauger. That was pretty much it.

Move around to a few other spots on that side - didn't even mark a fish on the flasher. Before I headed in (around 2ish), I tried over in the WI-side shanty town. Had something come up and tap my jigging rap a few times but couldn't get a hookset. Threw just about everything in my tackle box down there but couldn't buy a solid bite. I tried swedish pimples, jigging spoons, leadhead jigs, diamond jigs, bare hooks... nothing.

I might give it a try again tomorrow - I'm a glutten for punishment!

I think I'll hit the other spot so just we are spread out a bit and not fighting for the same fish. See which one is better. I'll come over and talk to ya after awhile. I agree the morning cant come fast enough. Good luck!

Croixeyes- wish I would have posted that here to save a few bucks. I gotta start doin a little research before I just get all exicited and buy something right away. Thanks anyways though. Glad to hear the books are good though, cant wait to get them.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
