Personally, im starting to pick op more hens...my last few fish this past week were running about half and half. It's weird how that goes sometimes youll get all males for awhile and then the females will show up. Sometimes its the other way around.

are you guys starting to see more fish rolling lately.I will be down there tomorrow to give it a try.weather looks like it should be pretty good as long as the ice stays out from shore.

Ok, some are going to think I'm nuts, and others will think what we did was a good idea.

Here goes:

On Friday AM (2/22), fished in Mcquade harbor. Fish ignored our baits til 8:30. Flat calm waters on the other side of the breakwall had us going home and pulling out the canoe. In the water with it for 2 hours up by Bluebird in the afternoon. Dragged flat line stick baits on walleye rods and ended up with 3 loopers. It was a stinkin riot. Yes, we wore life jackets and stayed very close to shore. Won't do this again, unless its really flat, but it created some memories, though.

Never canoed on Superior before, and had to wait for a February day to do it....

Nothing wrong with that. I go out in a canoe while I'm up in grand marais in june...when it's calm out of course. Great way to catch those fish that are juuuuuuust too far out to get from shore.

I don't think that's crazy at all. Great job taking an unconventional approach to looper fishing. Won't be too long and I'll be out in the boat as well.

Yup, I've put the Otter and the snowmobile away, time to start tying flies and getting all the long rods out of the closet.

For what Quick? Everyone knows fly guys don't catch fish. blush.gif Maybe if you dip those flies around my favorite hole, the egg stink will confuse one of those poor fishies into thinking it was the real deathroesack.

You should thank me DeathRoe, if I used bait there probably wouldn't be ANY loopers left on the north shore! grin.gif JK of course, I'll actually be out on the south side of the french tommorrow dunking a little spawn for a tasty looper. I'm bringing the fly rod and waders with, but I don't see myself standing out there all day.

IF anyone else is down there stop by, I'll be the guy with 3 loopers on shore!

Quick dont forget to tie me up some of those top secret shiner patterns for the upper river. Man will I get some looks or what?

I've got a few things that I actually think would work quite well for ya Steve. Porter killed the eye's on flies on day last year and I think I could tie you a couple weighted flies that would work great early season for swinging through the current.

I've always gotten burnt out on ice fish around the end of February. Early trout season starts march 1st, loopers and steelies start showing up and only a month until the Brule opens, so I've got plenty of things to keep me busy.

What's the Brule? Oh, they're that Native American music group. Actually it's pronounced Brew-lay.

Quick I will try anything once and a lot more if I have success with them. Its so nice when I dont have to use live bait. Especially when its cold and wet out. Can I toss them on 8# power pro?

Pudsky, welcome aboard! There are 11 loopers left in the lake. One at each popular fishing spot. The shore doesn't give them up that often but my success is always 100% when I fish for them in my freezer. You've made two trips in the cold and no loopers? That's way better than 80% of the other shore anglers. Keep trying. Don't be afraid to pack it up and try a different spot. If you see somebody catch one, leave. It was the only one. Ok, I'm kidding about that (and the 11 loopers left in the lake part). If you want a looper search past posts and articles in this forum. My advice to you for now is to use lighter line and hang in there. Don't take your eyes off of that bobber. The minute it moves take up the slack and set the hook. Lots of line means lots of stretch. Take your worst friend along to grab your fish. That way if he misses and causes you to lose your prized black beauty you can punch him in the ear and not feel bad later. He wasn't a good friend in the first place.

Pudsky isn't new. He's just been lurking for 10+ months. I have no problem sharing fishing info, but with 2000 views on this tiny thread, i don't know. I'm a generous man, but you will never see me in front of the Duluth/Superior sport show yelling out reports and spots, which could be likened to reports here. Why not have to be a member? That would at least take Lurky McSpotstealer out of the mix.

I don't know you, Lurky. You might want to harm my steel pets that i love so dearly.

If we make people become members then we will have to charge a membership fee and FM has never wanted to do that. There arent any sites I know of that you cant go "Lurk" or "Leech" on. You have to join FM in order to post and I think thats how it will probably stay for a long time.

Nothing you can do about Johny Too Lazy To Find My Own Spots. They are every where. \:\(

Poor guy...lurks for almost a year and when he finally steps up to the plate and gets an identity the razzing begins. I'll be out this weekend on the shore and hopefully I'll be out in my little boat a bit too.

Don't worry you guys, I can handle all the razzing you can throw at me..as long as you can handle me catching all your fish!! Ha, ha, but really I have just recently started fishing for the Trout on Superior and I love it. I will be doing this more and more for a long time to come. I think now it is my favorite fishing to do..well aside from nailing those delisious carp down at the river!!

Hi everyone. My name is Matt...and I'm an addict. I have plans to be working a lot of steel this spring. Anyone want to form a new Steel(head) Worker's Union?

HI MATT!! I'm Deathroe...and i have a problem. Every time i go out and try and have a nice day with some steelhead...i hurt them. I've stabbed so many i've lost count. Stabbed right in the mouth.

Matt, don't work steel, lead is still better. I know you're concerned about those loons, but c'mon, there's more loons than ever. I don't know if i'm Union Material. I like the idea of a cult or a gang better. In fact, get a pin and join my gang. Catfishhunter and i will beat you in, don't worry we'll take it easy on you.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
