March crappie action

2 posts in this topic

Thinking of heading up the last weekend in March. When the crappies start moving in later in the season how far does a guy need to wonder out to get them? I plan on going out of Hillman's. I assume that it's not the 6-8 miles out that they are currenty fishing. Any thougths?

Late March most people are going out to about 3 miles. The bite goes from there to as far out as you want to go. 2 years ago I found a spot about 1 mile out that produced regularly. The nice thing about that time of year is that most of the snow is gone and the holes do not freeze up over night so you can run and gun for miles day after day using the same holes and never need the auger. grin.gif

Lengths were a little tough to figure out without stressing the fish.  My board only goes to 24 and that wasn't enough.   I did tare my digital scale with the hoop of my rubber net and weighed em in that.  One was 6; the other 8.4.  I had another 24 incher earlier in the day but didn't weigh it.   We got 1 pike and severa smallies too but let everything go since fish wasn't on the menu this weekend.

First place to look would any of the local dams. Gull river, Mississippi, Crosslake, all have fish throughout the year.   There are a few piers to try as well.

Hello guys I'm new to this site and sorta new to the area. We do not yet have a boat so the family is trying to find some decent shoreline fishing in the area. Has anyone heard any shoreline reports?
