Little Gabbro Lake

6 posts in this topic

I am heading to Little Gabbro for a few days in June. Can anyone point me to some good fishing areas on or connected to this lake? Thanks in advance.

Hit the narrows between the two lakes, and where the river comes into Gabbro from Bald Eagle.

You will have good fishing on Big Gabro, try around the first island to the north. You can also go down the lake to where Bald eagle runs into Gabro and fish below the rapids there. Also the current between Gabro and Bald Eagle can be good.

Just don't waste your time in the Kawishiwi River. There are absolutely no walters below the rapids, at the end of the portage from Little Gabbro. Heck there are no walters upstream a few bends, below a much bigger set of rapids either.

Flatlander,

Well, that depends how early in June. There are fish below just about every riffle from early May to sometime around the middle of June. Then it gets pretty slow for many parts of the Kawishiwi.

That's a good point. The last few years, I've done a 4-5 day basecamp fishing trip on the Kawishiwi, but that was always late-May. I've never found any really big girls, lots of 12"-17". There are some monster Pike roaming though. I had one that hit a 16"er on my stringer, that left chomp marks from the middle of the dorsal fin up to the walters snout. It was just a big shadow coming up through the stained water. Made the trip that year.

I never got around to scouting it, wish I would have. I spent a lot of time in Dunes and other small WMA scattered in the 601 zone to take advantage of the unlimited antlerless harvest. I know there is some good duck hunting to be had in Sherburne too if I can get away from the idiots. That seems to be a difficult task when waterfowl hunting within a 20 mile radius of the metro.

Lots of mayflies now.  Larvae were coming up two weeks ago and now good amounts of sheds on the water.  Fishing has been great for those willing to move around and find active fish.  Start looking to first reefs off islands and shorelines as fish are starting to move to them.  30ft for us was good. Leeches.  2-3ft snell.  Plain hook.  Caught quite a few yesterday.  Good size range.  Kabetogama

Besides there's 3 nice ramps there. 1 on the west, 2 to the east of the bridge.

Good pretty good. Went out from the northwest side I think Garrison. Made our way to eight mile was able to go full-throttle the majority of the way but when the waves got too big has lower down. My buddy went looking for a drift sock but couldn't find one so we used a five-gallon bucket which work fairly well glad we had at least that. Well we are drifting it was perfectly fine but a pain in the butt trying to motor back up through the big waves. Then after some time sitting out there I had enough of sitting on those big waves and told my buddy that we needed to get closer to shore. The right back was very slow going and wet. Started to get a little concerned when my bilge pump stopped working and the back of my boat started to fill up especially when I was finally able to give it more throttle man the back of the boat was full of water but we made it back I got a new bilge pump and everything was all good quite the experience but I'll be back there again with my boat. And good thing we had back when we did there was barely any gas left in the tank.

Well better you found it now and not this weekend or you would be SOL fore sure being the 4th.  Nothing wrong with a good old lake bath though!  Good Luck.
