OK guys what do you do in the ice fishing season when your not an ice fisherman????? I think I am going insane with boredom!!!! I do ice fish but dont have my equipment anywhere close (all up north). besides, I dont see the point in going up now to get the stuff, not enough of the season left to make it worth it. any suggestions would be great! I have my boat and all my open water fishing equipment ready for summer so thats not an option. I was thinking maybe a fishing addicts meeting somewhere, just to shoot the bull about fishing in general. Maybe meet at a cafe or something, for coffee and pie, and the like? Leave an answer if anyone is interested. ........... Todd

I bought a WII and got a few fishing games for it.

Other then that, winters a great time to do the honey-do lists that just don't get done during open water.

Theres Football on Sundays (go Giants!), wrestling on the BTN, fishing on Versus and outdoor network.

2 more months... \:\)

It could be worse I have been layed up for 4 weeks with a broken leg looking at my icefishing stuff at least I should be ready to fish in about 3 weeks .finally today i took a drive out to some lakes to at least watch somebody else fish. I can't believe all the houses on the lakes this year.

Yes, theres a ton of houses out. French and Mazaska look like mini cities, even my lake is busier than last year.

I will how ever be going icefishing once this year...with a buddy up on LOTW end of feb. I do actually own 1 ice rod and 2 tip ups, they are just dusty :p

Yeah I bought the truck in the summer then got laid off 4 months later. So the boat will have to wait.

The wife will be there when you get back. We all need new jobs anyway. So we'll leave mid week after I hear back on whether or not I got these 2 jobs I've been interviewing for. South Florida bass here we come.

Someone has to drag wallyhunter onto the ice. If I dont head for Ely or Grand Marais at the end of the week maybe I can meet you down at Mazaska or somewhere. Get you a few fish.

What? Other than first ice, the best ice fishing of the year (~2 months) is upon us.

I would agree with Jamison. The next two months can be simply awesome for ice fishing. The panfish bite will be the best of the year in 3-6 weeks.

Plenty of time to hit the ice and have a great day ogf fishing before open water season begins.

I would have to agree as well. I have only been on the ice twice so far this season, but I plan to ramp up my time on the ice as late ice approaches. Panfish on late ice - there is nothing better.

IDK, they are hard to beat now . I spent from 5am till 2pm on the lake today and had the time of my life, spent the first few hours looking throught the deep stuff I had been fishing after sruggling to catch a few for the pan went on hunch that they moved shallow and BINGO ... HIT THE MOTHER LOAD of big gills some nice perch and a few crappies

also I had no competition for those spots do to decreased fishing pressure on the lake, I hope it continues till then I am kind of tired of fishing the 25-36' range it was nice too catch them in 7- 10' for once....

Lets see what the week brings guys. This week could get a bit crazy. I'll see about Thursday or Friday night down on a south central area lake.

Or if you want to head for Red Wing I'll be there. I'd love to share a boat with you guys.

Whenever you can get on the ice is the best time to fish. Forget that late ice or early ice garbage. You've got great ice conditions go out and enjoy it.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
