Fishermans Wharf & Big point for the Weekend

Fishing Trip

He began his day with an 8lb walleye on the first tip-up and a 7lb on the second. On the third bite he had just caught his first ever walleye over 11 pounds when his cell phone rang.

It was a doctor notifying him that his wife had just been in a terrible accident and was in critical condition and in the ICU.

The man told the doctor to inform his wife where he was and that he'd be there as soon as possible. As he hung up he realized he was leaving what was shaping up to be his best day ever on the water. He decided to set the tip-ups a couple of more times before heading to the hospital. He ended up fishing the rest of the morning, finishing his trip with a stringer like he'd never seen, with 3 walley over 10 pounds.

He was jubilant........then he remembered his wife.

Feeling guilty he dashed to the hospital. He saw the doctor in the corridor and asked about his wife's condition.

The doctor glared at him and shouted, "You went ahead and finished your fishing trip didn't you?! I hope you're proud of yourself! While you were out for the past four hours enjoying yourself on the pond your wife has been languishing in the ICU!! It's just as well you went ahead and finished because it will be more than likely the last fishing trip you ever take! For the rest of her life she will require round the clock care. And you'll be her care giver forever!"

The man was feeling so guilty he broke down and sobbed.

The doctor then chuckled and said........"I'm just [PoorWordUsage]' with ya. She's dead. What'd you catch?"

Has anybody been out of the Wharf latley or out to big point???

Were going out for the weekend, So im sure we'll be at Fishermans in the evevings closing the place up and getting a bite. Anyone up for some beer pong or 6-5-4.

The weather looks good and we might have a good chance at some fish over the weekend.

One question, how can the man be fishing tip-ups and be casting at this same time? Is this story even true? No more work for me today, to much pondering to do.

I was out there last weekend and caught a limit of eyes. Had 2 really nice ones that went back and also a few perch. Tons of them on the aqua view and TONS of little perch that like to screw with your hook. Good luck out there.

Don't believe it! haven't heard of one person catching a limit of eyes this year on Mille Lacs! If you did thats great but highly unlikely!

I've caught 2 limits of eye's my only weekend out on Mille this season.Granted they weren't all keepable(pesky slot limits)but it can be done.Look on page 4 under my post "got Walleyes?"Pictures with a report from 11thru13th a week or so ago!c63.

For one the slots not pesky! It was 14-16 for half the summer try that out! For two your limit is four in possession, so the fish that go back in the lake don't count towards your limit. Don't get me wrong I've seen some nice fish pulled out this winter, but not one person I have talked to has come home with their limit of walleyes.

A group of us were out there this past Sunday and Monday. Rented three ice cabins from the Wharf. Great accommodations. Fishing was spotty at best. A couple of jumbos and one small walleye on a tip up was about it. Saw lots of perch on the cam and flasher, but there just appears to be too much natural bait in the water for them right now. Good luck.

I took your post the wrong way.I was being sarcastic about the slot.In my book if you pull it up the hole it counts as at least a fish caught limit.(not to keep)I hope you as well as everyone can catch if not keep a limit of eye's.It's getting easier every year to throw the 21to say 23 inchers back.I wish the perch were biting better but that will come later in the season.Good luck and I will give a updated report after this weekend.c63

Eyehunter, I seriously doubt if anybody is going to tell you if they caught a limit on the pond. Reason being, they probably don't want to answer all of the ensuing questions that would follow. I'm sure there are people up there catching fish!

Good luck, ole

everyone was catching their limit up their this summer. and guess what. I heard about it. and I caught my limit many times this summer. NO ONE is catching many fish this winter. I don't care how good of a fishermen you are. Ive been fishing the lake for 20 years. and trust me no one is catching many fish.

I would have to agree with eyehunter on this.I also have fished this lake many years and when there is this much food in the lake the bite is tough and and the fish are more then well fed for some time.Ive seen this happen befor on the lake where there was big hatch's of perch and the bite was tough all year and not to be the guy to turn people away from this lake but i will say this find another lake to fish this year or just keep seeing fish and not catching them.Good luck and hope you can find them to because i did but only after i moved to another lake where the fish are active. Just my 2 cents. cool.gif

I would say gull would be a good choice or any other lake for that matter Red,Winni,LOTW,or there are many many more choices the list is endless.I went a little north of mille lacs my last trip up fished a lake called farm island i do believe and did really well on both perch & eyes but had to move to get them.On the pond you can move & move drop the cam sure you will see fish but are they going to bite well every time up this year 5 times now fished 3-4 days each time and caught not much to write home about but seen big eye's big perch on cam and thats about what every one else up there is getting. So if your out to see fish and not catch mille lacs is the lake but if your out to catch fish and have a few for a meal i would try any other lake that dont have the food the eye's on the pond have right now. cool.gif Dont get me wrong i will try the pond again a few times this year but i also have many backup plans on other lakes when im up there.

3 walleyes in 2 weekends is great? that is terrible. i hope our standards have not gotten that low. I got 3 eyes last weekend 25-27. This weeknd only a pout and 2 keeper perch. It can't get worse. Anyone getting any perch in the Wharf area?

Heading up to the Fishermans' Wharf this weekend. Never been on this side of the lake. How is the resort? and what are the latest reports from this area? thanks

Good luck on the East side Slab-Slayer. Years ago I first went to the East side of the lake. Haven't been back to the West side since... It's completely different than the west. You're likely to walk into a bar and have half of the heads turn to see who walked in. Leave the (612) swagger in the cities, and you'll love the Wharf...and they'll welcome you. Can't give you a fising report, but there's plenty to fish over there, and plenty of roads plowed, up and down the East side of the lake. Have fun...

any reports? How is the cold weather moving in Saturday going to affect the bite this weekend. I'm pretty open on when to go, am I better waiting for a more "stable" weather weekend?

thanks is advance for the replies

You probably will have better fishing later rather than fishing a cold front. But you never know. The fishing might be getting better allready as paul sujests in his post. Me, Im going anyways just becouse I like to fish. Heck, go this weekend and go when its nicer too...... What do you have to loose? I'd be willing to bet that you will have a good time regardless of the bite. Then maybe just maybe you might get into them anyways.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
