When you use fireline on your ice fishing rods do you use sometype of flouro or mono as a leader or do you tie your hooks straight to the fireline? Thanks!

I put mono on first for like 20 yards maybe, just like on a casting reel. Then i tie the fireline on, i put my jigs right on the fireline and have never had problems.

Thats what i do to. Just put a mono backer in the reel first and put the fireline on. I also tie right to the jig.

I should have put before it pretty much is a must to put mono on first, before i put it right on the spool and i was fine untill i got into some real cold temps where my spool contracted cause of the cold and you could just peel the line right off.

I tie it directly to the lure. I've caught my fair share of fish this year and see no problem with it.

I have also worried about the quality of the bite...and the absence of perch. At least on the northwest side, anyways, where we almost never mark small perch anymore.  In years past, the best indicator of a soon-to-be big red mark on the Vex was that the small perch vacated the area.  I did see TONS of perch down on the south side this year, but I don't know how the numbers there compared to years past, either.   But yeah, the bite has been excellent for, what, three years now?  We're also catching a decent mix of fish (though of course most are from the 2013 year class).  The only good thing to mention, at least in my experience, is that the fish do look very healthy and fat, very unlike the fish during the "boom years" in the mid-2000's when everything you'd catch would be a skinny 26 incher.

Bite has been non existent for us this weekend for pike...we fished out of springsteel yesterday one flag. We are out of warroad and no flags yet... We tried as shallow as 4ft, out in 11ft now.

When I was a kid, I used to ask my dad to take me ice fishing--he would always say "wait 'till it gets warmer"......
