Bay Lake

Recommended Posts

CNC Mike,

Our weekend on Bay turned out pretty good! Not much in the way of northerns (half-dozen), no walleys, but we picked up some nice crappies (30 total), sitting on the bottom, from 5-7 p.m. each day. Nothing going on early a.m. or during the day. Fished mainly off and around Malkerson Island in 30 fow. I guess you take what you get and I'll take the crappie meals any day. Hope to make it back up later on and give it a go again. Had a great weekend in spite of the cold temps, even with the Packers loosing. Good Luck the rest of the season and thanks again for the info on Bay.

Isn't that strange? i have tried Bay numerous times in the am and never get anything. Evening/night is where it's at.

Glad to hear you had some success out there.

Crappies were +- 12 inches. Nice size! We went on the lake at Rutgers, but it's pretty much ice covered, downhill, with 2 - 90 degree turns. Not bad going down, but watch it coming up. Found that the public access was much better with a nice gradual slope, easier if you are hauling a wheeler. Ice is between 16-18" and people are driving just about anywhere on the lake. Some of the well traveled spots are pretty much a roadway. Saw one group that hit some slush on back side of Malkerson and heard about some slush by Whitehawk, but other than that you can drive just about anywhere. Good Luck!

I had a buddy go out last night and couldn't get a thing to bite and the people around him had the same results......hopefully it is the weather and not the end of January lull!!

I went out last night and caught 5 nice ones. First time on bay this year, not bad for how cold it was.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thinking about heading out this weekend, anyone fishing the south end? is anyone fishing the deeper water for suspended fish? Sounds like the 30 foot range was decent last week. I will head out for the evening bite for sure, crappies sound pretty tasty!

Hopefully you found something.....I know after the post about being off the island in 30ft of water post that weekend that area was packed like a zoo....power of the net when you give specific areas!!!! Broad reports space people on the lake and keep some from even fishing a bigger lake! Good Luck

I noticed that. But they were packed into that area late in the season last year too. So it might not have been all from reading that post.

I still have my spot to myself, thankfully but i have for the last 5 seasons or so.

Heading out there Wednesday night again. hopefully I can still have some peace and quiet and catch a few fish as well.

Off the island in 30 FOW -- that's a pretty big island. We started in one area around alot of houses, then scouted areas around the island and got lucky where we ended up. Friend close by didn't catch much of anything. There was another group of houses off the island but we wanted the depth, not necessarily the location. I'd like to think we could drive the masses but I think we were just a bit lucky. Sometimes driving to the end of a set of tracks gets you where you want to go. Good Luck all around a big lake!

I suppose enough fellas read up on this site to really effect a lake that much eh? Sad if that is the case but it sure is nice to use from the eager fishermans perspective. I enjoy advice that is general such as the 30 foot depth comment above, it is helpful and yet allows one to be imaginative with his technique.

I agree....if it is vague it gets people to look at a map and start making decisions as to where to try.....i.e. fishing in 30 ft on the north end.

How much pressure does Bay get? I have always wanted to try the lake, just haven't gotten the chance. Is it pretty active with recreational skiers, boater etc. in the summer? Thanks for the info.

Slipperybob were you out during the daytime or evening? I have never fished right off the access before though over the years I have seen a few houses there.

Bay gets fairly steady pressure at least in the winter. I have yet to have any real good luck in the summer so I rarely go there then.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
