How's the ice on Buchanan and other small lakes in the area

6 posts in this topic

How's the ice out there? Really slushy at most lakes in the Duluth area. I'll be out at the in-laws in Ottertail for Christmas and hope to get out for a few days with Dad.

was on buchanan last wednesday the 12th to check the ice, and found about 9 inches 3-400 yards off shore, seemed to be lots of snow. the ice was good and clear and was no houses on the lake on the 12th. no water on top of the ice either, but here hadnt been anyone out there to pop a hole or two for the water to come up. im taking my spearhouse there on saturday morning, ill let you know how it goes

Thanks Pooh. I'll be fishing closer to shore anyway. Hopefully the bite is good. We usually just go for the pan fish out there.

I have read that mercury levels are a reason there is no commercial harvest on vermilion. But it was probably the same thing you read as I have not found a second source of that. There is commercial harvest of rustys on other Minnesota lakes so there must be a reason it's not done here.    For or what it's worth, the DNR has suggestions on how much fish to eat because of mercury.
