Wahkon Bay Report 12-14/12-15

2 posts in this topic

Got out friday afternoon with the wheeler out of wahkon bay. There are plowed roads and vehicles driving out to half moon island. Fished the just past the island in about 16-20 feet. Picked up some perch, but no size. The ice just past the island is fine, but there seems to be another layer of ice under the top layer. Must have blown under when the main lake was freezing. Made clearing the holes a little tricky. You needed to push the ice down and chip at it and scoop like crazy. I did not make it out of the bay, but did see a few people on wheelers and snowmobiles venture out of the bay.

The bite turned on at 4:30 and ended at 5pm. I iced a few walleyes. 10,22 and 24 incher. Saturday was similar. Slow going during the daytime bite and picked up at 4:30 again. Ended up with a nice perch and a couple walleyes. A 14, and a fat 27. Looking forward to some more exploring soon!

Thanks for the report Fishalot. Sounds like you did pretty good for having such a small window of "bitetime".

Most of our fish came on minnows under bobbers. I spooked countless fish with even subtle jigging.

I never made it out Monday was too tired from fishing Friday - sunday didn't feel like getting up early

Hey, Here a quick update on actual ice thickness or snow cover on trout. 14 inchs of ice pressure ridge out there. if you are  on a snowmobile if traveling fast on it watch for it. Truck or car i do not recommend on trout with pressure ridge. And yes i have been on the whitefish chain this year in truck. just not on trout. just my 2 cents

Thanks for the info everyone. And Borch that is good to know too.  I try to spend 2-3 hours looking on cedar each trip, but It's a lot of water to break down , and having only been out hardwater cattin 6 times so far I still have a lot to learn.  Generally I spend a lot of my 3 hours losing confidence and then wind up at the meth hole to catch a few .  Putting in the work is what makes it so fun once it all comes together though!
