Has there been any discussion about bringing back the Cool Cats event this year? I thought that was a great event.

Yes. 1st Saturday in March.

Last year's event was cancelled due to mother nature being funny with a couple feet of snow. Hopefully the snow stays away this year.

would like to see it on tonka, for some reason i never ice tonka! that would be a good opportunity to meet and greet and try to get some points while i am out there about tonka.

prior wouldnt be bad but catching crappies and sunnies gets old real fast.

There are always 2 things to consider when holding an event. It helps to have someone who knows the water and can direct people who are unfamiliar. I went to the first metro one on Tonka a couple years ago and everyone plopped down in one spot and there were like 5 fish caught.

The other thing is not packing it into a day that is already booked by another event. All weekends....or at least the saturdays, are booked in January. I know of two events in Feb. that aren't posted yet, but they will happen. Its important to have a day that doesn't compete with other events.

So far... the 2 very popular opinions are Prior and Tonka. Guess what? I know squat about both those lakes. grin.gif

I do know Medicine enough to put a bunch of guys on a good panfish bite but we would be talking metro panfish here... stunted. frown.gif And we will be practicing finesse fishing at its finest! grin.gif

Any weekend during the next month will find me busy, but don't let that stop a bunch of you guys from organizing a get-together of your own if you wish.

I will be up north this weekend, Lake of the Woods & Red the following weekend, and LOW or URL weekend after that.

Let's keep this topic going... seams to be a lot of interest this year. If Prior or Tonka are the prevailing opinion, I'm sure we can find someone to lead us in the right direction. I'm not opposed to a Sunday either as someone mentioned being busy on Saturday's but wanting to attend. All options are open to hopefully allow a good turnout of people!

okay guys, as Hanson said, it's pretty much narrowed down to Prior and Tonka. Let's try to narrow it down to 1 from those two. my vote goes for Prior.

I know a few spots on prior as well, but if the ice gets thick and the "villages" pop up, it will cut down on some of my better places.....

I vote Tonka. I am sure someone will chime in on the lake. I have limited summer knowledge of lake, but I am always up for a little challenge.

Plus I think it is nice central location in state and metro. It is a little to the west, but should be big enough where some local F.M.ers can drive by and see which bays are not loaded up.

Either way, I am sure it will be fun. cool.gif

I appreciate your drive, Ace, but it looks like we've already got about 2/3's of the respondants voting Prior, about 1/3 Tonka, and a few other scatterred suggestions. I think a date is in order, now. I'll throw out Dec 29th/30th for a start.

There are other Get Togethers scheduled for most of January already:

Jan 5th: Otter Run in Madison Lake (S. Central MN)

Jan 12th: Sarah Saturday by Slayton (SE MN)

Jan 19th Tetonka Rendezvous in Waterville (S. Central MN)

After that there isn't anything scheduled as of yet, but I did hear about Cool Cats sometime in Feb.

If anyone wants to meet up I'm fishing the North end of Lower Prior today and am trying to scout some new spots, so anything would be appreciated. I'll be in a Purple Otter Cabin with a blue 3 wheeler. Don't hesitate to stop by and chat with a fellow FMer!

Ace - thinking about trying Odowd on Sat morning as well. Will be in a green Otter Lodge (tan Tahoe... on shore of course). Stop by for a cold one... I'm a rookie to the Southern lakes, but now that I'm living in the South metro I'd like to start meeting some guys who like to fish the area.

Tonka for sure......! Prior is to predictable where as Tonka you never know if it's a 3-lb Crappie, 13-lb Eye or 50-lb Ski is coming your way!

It does seem that the scale is leaning towards Prior as being the lake but would it be possible to make a poll so it would be easier to keep track of votes?

I'm up for either lake as I have never fished either but Tonka seems to be a little better choice since it is a little more centralized.

Prior is closer for me, but I would rather hit Tonka. Agree with Pierbridge

However like Hanson, my Sat's are pretty much spoken for.

I might be able to make it on any Sunday in Jan except the 27th.

I have never fished Prior and I only have a little experience with Tonka, but I would rather be on Tonka, because of what Pierbridge said too. Either way, I would like to join this get-together.

Curtis

We could aways have 2....

One on Tonka early to get into some eyes or Gators...

Then have another one in Late Feb or March for the late season pannies?

Just throwing it out there.

Prior is closer, but i would go for Tonka based on the caliber of fish.

12/29 works for me as well.

Thats sounds like a good idea. Which lake do you guys think will have the best ice by dec 29. I think Prior will??

so, if youre going to have 2, why would we make them both western metro lakes. maybe we should have one on prior or tonka, then one on an eastern metro lake like forest, wbl, or bald eagle. that would make it nicer for our eastern metro/western wi clan. just my .02.

I think by the time a place and date are picked the ice season will be over grin.gif. Someone just has to take charge "Hanson" and pick a place and date. The get togethers are always a good time!! grin.gifgrin.gif To catch decent fish(pannies) in tonka you need to be there in the early morning or evening. Prior is a crapshoot. Chisago/Lindstrom/Green lake area always has a daytime bite but its a drive for many people. You can always catch fish on Peltier. Bald Eagle has a decent day bite with sunnies and northern. You won't catch size during the day on most metro lakes. I do have one but.... crazy.giffrown.gif

bgreen,

I would not say Prior is a "west metro lake", I would call it more like a south metro lake.

I would like to change my vote to West Rush on March 1st.

Just joking, I think Tonka is good sound lake that every ones knows where it is. Prior on the other hand, I have never fished and would consider adding it as one of the local lakes I have fished and put another one under my belt type thing. But my vote is CaTonka. grin.gif

Gotta love the Metro Get Togethers smile.gif I remember back when we used to have one just about every weekend someplace in the Metro. I'd be up for one again somewhere.

Anyone remember the snowball fight on Bald Eagle? Or the traveling caravan of trucks up in the Chisago area? smile.gif Those were the days... cool.gif

Lake Minnetonka can be a lot of fun, as can Medicine. Both are great choices for numbers and size of fish...

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
