New Nils won't cut

SCOTTJ

Question

I finally got my new Nils auger all set up and out on the ice yesterday. I was really looking forward to using it after all the good I have heard.

For some reason, it won't cut a complete hole without hanging up. The motor just won't power through all the way.

The blade is extremely sharp, and it cuts about an inch or two down and then can't get the rest of the way. The motor runs great and doesn't quit running.

Is there some kind of adjustment I'm not seeing with clutch engagement or something? It seems like the blades take an awfully big bite. I wonder if they are at the wrong angle or something.

I hooked it up to my old Mora bottom half and it cut through fine.

I'm another guy who will stay with my Strikemaster. Seems kind a crazy to have to burn a tank of gas or two, just sitting on the ground waiting to "break it in". You think that they could figure something out on the manufacturing end so consumers ..... buy it - start it and let her go. OK, you Nils fans, let me have it:). What, you can't hear me -- your still breaking in your auger. Just having a little fun...........Merry Christmas..................

Well I've owned several Strike Master and they are great augers. But if you're saying they don't need to be broken in your kidding yourself. Everyone I owned bogged at the bottom of the ice until they cut a 100 holes or so. Then they just got better with use. That constitutes break in in my book. They aren't as tight as the Nils. But all augers benefit from break in.

I also needed to break in my Jiffy. Seems all augers will need a good break in period to perform at 100%.

jjohnson, thanks for getting back to us with an update.

All engines go through a break-in period. After that break-in you'll see improved performance. Could be an outboard, auger, snowmobile, car, or what ever.

A little time to let an engine warm-up is needed also. When I start my snowmobile I need to let it warm-up before I take off. If I don't it'll bog. Its also very hard on the engine to put it under load or higher RPMs without a warm-up. Same is true for most engines.

Modern cars can be started and driven with a cold engine with no notice in lost performance. Thats because of FI, emission controls that are ever changing and adjusting to temps via a brain. Still a short warm-up will prolong that life of the engine. With all the advances in automobile engines there are generations that don't know better when it comes to engines with carbs. Its turned into a turn the key and drive away deal. That basic understanding about engines is lost.

Augers use a carb thats set to perform best at operating temps. There is no brain to richen to fuel/air mixture between hot and cold other then a choke and that choke is for starting purposes and till the engine warms.

Glad to hear jjohnsons problems are over.

I don't know of a single motor out there, 2 stroke or 4 stroke or diesel that can go from sitting in the back of a pickup at -10 wind chill, to wide open throttle without a warm-up period of some type.

Warming them up is one thing-running two tanks of gas while sitting on your garage floor is a different deal........just my opinion. I start my StrikeMaster, let her run for a minute-at the most two and "get her done". You guys that use Nils are probably the same guys who use MarCum's. I'M JUST HAVING FUN.....DON'T TAKE ME SERIOUSLY!! MERRY CHRISTMAS

Wow, what does that make me. I use a Marcum but use a 12-year old Jiffy Model 76. I'm still on the original blade!!! smile.gif

Happy Hoidays

Breaking in an auger wouldn't stop me from getting out fishing. It'll break in drilling holes too, its just that after break in you'll get better performance. Just let it warm up. The Tanaka is a great little engine. The Nils auger is going to last you a long time so a little time and gas burnt breaking in isn't a big deal for me.

I just took off the lower unit and let it sit on the deck and every 20 min. I would go out and rev it up.I went thru 4 tanks of gas but the first time on ice it ran perfect. I ran it with 2 of the pillow packs of amsoil to a gallon of gas to break it in and from now on I will go to 100:1.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
