It varies. Some years a lake will be very clear and other years it will be murky. Most of the lakes around St. Cloud have an abundance of hammerhandles.

I have tried Rice, Big, and Eden so far this year and the water clarity is terrible in all of them. Makes it almost impossible to spear anything. I will let you know if I find one that is clear enough to actually see a fish in.

Go to Sagatagan on the SJU campus! There are actually some very nice northerns in the lake, though most of them are dinks. And you can't use anything motorized, so if you want to go, bring the chisel.

I went out there once and felt like a Spartan killing Persians....so many fish you couldn't miss!!!!! And the water is clearer than gin.

Hey, Here a quick update on actual ice thickness or snow cover on trout. 14 inchs of ice pressure ridge out there. if you are  on a snowmobile if traveling fast on it watch for it. Truck or car i do not recommend on trout with pressure ridge. And yes i have been on the whitefish chain this year in truck. just not on trout. just my 2 cents

Thanks for the info everyone. And Borch that is good to know too.  I try to spend 2-3 hours looking on cedar each trip, but It's a lot of water to break down , and having only been out hardwater cattin 6 times so far I still have a lot to learn.  Generally I spend a lot of my 3 hours losing confidence and then wind up at the meth hole to catch a few .  Putting in the work is what makes it so fun once it all comes together though!
