Hah! I'll wait with great eagerness for the first documented bolt of lightning to strike Ely in the month of December. Who's inheriting the store from you? grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Awww, at least will it to Justin G. He's already earned his new nickname around town: "jaws jr," AKA "mini jaws." grin.gifgrin.gif

Whoa...Whoa...Whoa...Wait just a minute!!!!

How did I get thrown into this cat fight?!?!???? I was just innocently checking to see what the ice conditions were and here I am stuck in the middle of this mess!!!! shocked.gif

How exactly did I earn THIS new nickname??? I must have missed SOMETHING. Sounds to me like G. Outdoors may have been talking smack about the "Fish Master!"

I was going to grace your shop tomoorow and pick up some crappie minnows around 7:45 am, but now it seems I will have to go and see your uncle on the west end of town! tongue.giftongue.giftongue.gif

Justin, you gave yourself the label "Fish Master," but you can't give yourself a nickname and expect it to stick. It has to be given TO you. Just like in college I was given the nickname "Hatch." I didn't want it, but there's no doubt I deserved it. grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Hold on Steve, I don't agree! ooo.gif

If Justin changed the nickname from Fish Master to Fish Face, I'm willing to bet we could make it stick!!

Well, Jim, we're ganging up on Justin and he didn't ask for that. As an old Catholic boy, that makes me feel guilty. Sorry, Fish Master. Just ribbin ya. We who live by the trash talk die by the trash talk. grin.gif

Checked the ice on Kramer Bay on Birch Lake today.

Walked out from the public access past the small islands and into the main channel. There was very little snow on the ice, most places having from one to four inches of snow, though shorelines and islands held more.

There had been a lot of slush, but most of it had frozen up tight. Where I drilled holes, I drilled through about two inches of slush that had frozen almost completely solid and in some places was totally frozen. Where there was that bit of slush, solid ice was six inches thick. Where it had frozen stiff, the ice was eight inches thick.

I saw some bad stuff today... 2 inches of snow with slush under that and in alot of cases- double ice with the bottom layer only 2 inches thick! frown.gif . Glad I didn't venture onto that stuff with the Honda. The slush layer in alot of places had frozen solid, but not everywhere. The ice thickness varies greatly this year so far so, please, tread lightly!

I heard someone broke through Burntside with a 4-wheeler yesterday from a couple of different people.

Yep, Justin, break-through for sure. Look farther up the thread where I posted an ice report yesterday and there is a bit of info about it.

Um, you didn't mention which lake you were talking about in your ice report.

Steve,

I heard the 4 wheeler through the ice on BS was the man who usually has 1st fishouse off the landing, John L. blush.gif

Talk to Nancy at Blomberg's tomorrow.

Thanks for the report on Birch....lets hope this cold weather builds that ice to get vehicle traffic out there!

We'll be on the Kramer Point side.

G.O., it was the guy named John who sets his house across Van Van bay on that hump not far offshore.

Ice on Kramer Bay on Birch today was a solid 10 inches where I was.

Did a little recon out on Shagawa today. Rode my snowmobile out from Semers all the way across the big part of the lake to the NW side. Man, was there some deep slush out there. There sure wasn't alot of sled traffic going across the lake and now I know why. Got over to the other side and drilled some holes and found 5" of milky white ice- there was nothing clear and strong looking about it. It didn't look too good epecially since I drug my Otter and all my gear with me. I fished around for about an hour and I sure wasn't feeling too good about being on that stuff or having to ride across that slush at high speed at night, so I got the heck outta there! crazy.gif

Are we ever going to have some good ice??????? I cannot believe that with all this cold weather, we have not made any new ice! confused.gif Be careful out there. I am going to stick to areas I have been fishing and know to be safe and NOT stray from the beaten path for now.

On a side note, that four wheeler that went though Burntside sunk in 80 FOW. They still havent recovered it yet that I am aware of.

Thanks, Justin, for taking one for the team! grin.gif

I figured Shag would still be in shambles, so I went to Birch instead. LOTS of ice and good fish off Kramer Bay. Drag that sled down there, JG. Public access off Country Club Road.

At this rate, it'll be almost laker season before Shag shapes up for ATV/sled fishing.

Sorry to hear John's ATV went to its watery grave.

Hey Steve,

Is there good ice all over the south end? How about over toward Mattila's and the Dunka Bay area? Has anyone been as far north as North Bay or Kangas Bay? Anyone dare check out the whole lake up to the Birch Lake Campground?

Just wondering how the ice is around the whole lake, I guess. I used to fish that lake alot and I like it out there. Don't want to be restricted to one spot out there as there are tons of places to fish all over out there. Its also a fun lake to ride the sled on while pulling the gear out. Kinda might be nice to take a little tour while fishing! laugh.gif Just want to be sure about the ice before heading out anywhere right now.

Thanks!

Justin

Sorry, Justin, no idea outside Kramer. Lots of sleds zipping through there today and out into the main channel areas, but I just pull the ole' trap II by hand a few hundred yards out and fish.

Sure wish I had the cajones to sled out to my coupla spots on the west side of Shag.

I don't know Birch well at all (just Kramer area), nor do I know Shag well at all (just those coupla spots). Those spots on both lakes do OK for me.

Saw the first snowmobiles of the year come around Kramer point today. They stayed pretty close to shore and had rooster tails four feet in the air behind 'em. I can see Aikio Island from my house and there hasn't been any travel out that way yet.

Thanks for the report, guys! I don't think I am going to be venturing too far out there yet. I definately would like to get over there and fish some this winter, so let me know when ice conditions improve some!

Thanks,

Justin

Went out and Grand lake(12-13) and measured 10" of ice.

Snow on top was 8" and wind blown. I hit one small slush pocket on the drive out. The area I drilled holes has some water coming up and turned slushy.

Thanks for ice info, you say you drove out, take your truck yet or other recreational vehicle?

Buddy of mine that fishes Grand, said there was vehicles (small trucks) out on the ice since Wednesday of this week. I personally don't recomend driving out on a vehicle yet. If you've got a snowmobile or wheeler, use it.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
