New Hunter - Some help please.....

6 posts in this topic

I'm new to hunting, just went my first time ever yesterday. I have a couple of buddies I met on this sight for fishing that are taking me hunting. Kingfisher and I hit Carlos Avery yesters. Wow!!!! I'm new but I know better than to shoot at birds 100 yards in the air. It was rediculous. Had a hunter pulling the trigger at a bird and shot right over my head from 20 yards away. I was more than PO'd after that happened. Anyway, can anyone give any ideas of other places to try around the metro or within and hour or so that would be good to try out? I don't need a honey hole for birds, just would like to get a few on an outing. If you don't want to post it here you can email me at s_e_hendricks@comcast.net. Also, if you're ever up to taking a newbie out let me know.

Kingfisher took me out last weekend and we didn't get a duck in close enough. Yesterday I went out with Matty, nice to meet you by the way, and we got 3 in close. My shooting isn't there yet and I missed, but it was fun getting some in close. Thanks for taking me out guys, I look forward to more hunting.

As far as I know every vechicle at every access has to pay a road fee .

Was wondering what the ice conditions are after the rain on Monday?

I use my 1660 Lund Pro-V Tiller for fishing Superior all of the time. I have 2' of track on both sides to hold my 4 aluminum rod holders and my triple trees. If you start using magnum dipsys with the ring they can pull hard enough to break most plastic rod holders. In the spring you are basically fishing the top 15' with plugs so any rod holder will do. Once you start trying to get to 40' and beyond is when you need to beef things up. I also have a mast and use the single big boards that Marine General sells for getting a good spread with you plugs. Once summer rolls around I will use Yellow Birds with 5 colors of lead on the outside  and dipsy's with 65lb Power Pro or steel depending on what depth I am trying to achieve to pull spoons or flies.

I see that the Royal Dutchman website had a blurb a couple days (2/17) ago that said nothing was happening yet, they also don't know how thick the ice is.  As usual hoping for a long spring season before it closes for walleye.  On a positive note most of the snow must have already melted with the record warmth so maybe won't be so much to cause runoff later on?
