Ya that city hunt goes way too long in my opinion. Funny how most guys see it as a "Rack" hunt instead of its intended purpose. I wonder how many guys would hunt it if it was antlerless only?

This is a herd reduction with a good chance to shoot a good Buck. But this hunt has helped a great deal for deer and cars and there still is a lot of deer. With all this snow there will be some winter kill and that will help out some what but we still need to shoot Does. It will take three more years to get it Down to where it should be. there is not a lot of food out there for them all and what a way to go by starving to death.

It is all about herd management and most of the hunters take it that way. I'm sure there are some that bend the rules, but I passed on a couple nice bucks this year because I didn't have my doe yet (and I still don't). I will be out on Monday for the last-ditch-effort and I can't wait to see the numbers once the season is over.

As someone who has participated in this hunt all three years, I would like to weigh in on this issue with my thoughts...

First off, I have have hunted in Duluth for the last three years. In that time, I have been fortunate enough to take 5 does and 2 bucks. I havent taken more, because that is the amount that that my family can use. I know there are means to donate deer as well, but I feel that on the whole the hunters are doing a more than adequate job in reducing the overall population.

I agree with Northlander partly.. The numbers would likely be way down if it was a doe only hunt, and many of us do get too focused on the fact that we may have the opportunity to take a mature buck. (Yes, I plead guilty on all counts grin.gif )

However, thats the catch-22, you need some means to entice enough hunters to participate in order to take out enough does. Giving them the opportunity to take a mature buck is generally a pretty easy way to accomplish that. In addition, in order to maintain a healthy population, you need some balance in the number of Buck/Does taken. Quoting an article I recently read, "A given habitat can only support a certain number of deer in healthy condition. If the number of deer exceeds this level, habitat degradation and poorer herd health result. About one-third of a deer herd should be removed each year to maintain the population at a stable level. If the sex ratio is balanced, doe harvest should make up between 40 and 60 percent of the overall harvest to maintain this healthy balance."

My point is that it is necessary to take both bucks and does out to maintain a healthy herd. The fact that these deer have had little predation over the last many years has resulted in a good number of mature bucks in the area, and the numerous moderate to easy winters have helped to allow the population to get way out of balance. You can see this in the condition of the forage around the forested areas of the city. I suspect this is why we see so many deer in yards eating the bushes, gardens, flowers, apples, etc.

In any case, I believe that taking both bucks and does out of the population is necessary. The real problematic issue that has arisen is that some individuals get overly possessive about places that they have hunted or would like to hunt. As hunters we need to realize that we are very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to hunt within the city of Duluth and that the public land that we hunt is exactly that. Its for the PUBLIC, which means we need to respect the rights of all the other people that use the land, hikers, bikers, joggers, other hunters, etc, etc.

If anything, I am concerned that the few folks who have not followed the rules will jeapardize the opportunity to participate in this hunt, and give a bad reputation to the vast majority of us who have lived up to the legal and ethical requirements of this hunt.

Is anyone heading out this afternoon for one last sit? I think I'm going to take the opportunity to shoot one more. It's a beautiful day and what better reason to sneak out of work one last time.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
