Is carpeting needed on bunks for pontoon trailer?

Question

bbells

I am converting a regular boat trailer to a bunk style pontoon boat trailer. Most bunk trailers have carpeting on the bunks. What does the carpeting do? Do I need to have the carpeting? My pontoons will be on full length 2x12 boards. Thanks for any help!

The carpet will protect the pontoons from dents and chaffing.

And it will aid in loading and unloading by allowing the toons to slide easier.
