Boat Landings-Be Aware

Correct me if I am wrong, but the permit you get is to "carry" a handgun, and not "conceal and carry". You can conceal, but there is no requirement to. I remember a radio show with a supporter correcting the interviewers on this fact. I may apply for it, and take the course as I think I would learn a lot. I am a gun fan and own plenty, but I do not think using one for protection is really the best thing, though I am not against it. Too many things to go wrong.

Anyway, back to the original topic, I agree that just trying to ignore such punks is the best thing, though hard to do when they start to get in your face. After having my but kicked by a drunk-driver-punk-meth-head-whatever-he-was, and my face kicked in literally, I am now thankful the punk did not have a knife or gun, and have now made changed my tune - I will avoid physical contact unless someone elses life depends on it. But I am old and it took me a while to learn that, ha! smile.gif

I would want to hear what the trainers have to say. It could influence my decision to go the whole way. I'm sure there is a lot to consider beyond what I am thinking right now. I'd like to think I wouldn't pull it unless one of my family members life or limb depended on it. I met a guy down in San Diego that had just shot someone trying to rob his dad's home. The guy was running away from the house, still in the fenced yard and had a tv and some other electronics. This gent told him to stop and when he didn't he shot him in his right butt cheek. The guy dropped the stuff and rolled around until the cops and ambulance got there. Sounded funny till he explained that since the guy did not die he was liable for his pain and suffering not to mention the medical bills. Granted California is "the" weirdest state but this guy got hosed for preventing a robbery. It truely is a mad mad mad world. Thanks to all that shared their ideas and fishing tales.

My thoughts on the whole issue at the landing.......jealousy. These punks were wishing they had as nice of a fishing rig as your Ranger (and towing vehicle - I am guessing). These guys would rather spend their $72.00 paychecks in the bar every weekend rather than save up for a fishing boat. Their comment about having a Yar Craft reminds of seeing bumper stickers "My Other Car Is A....."

Gotta' love beer muscles at 1:00 a.m., it happens everywhere! You did the right thing, ignore it, they are nothing but jealous punks.

Amen!

Pretty easy to run your mouth and talk smart when you are full of alcohol.

Wow guys, is this a Mille Lacs thing or what. I fish all over the metro in the summer and ice fish (Contact Us Please), red, LOW and have never seen punks at the landings harassing fisherman. What have I been missing. I normally just read the posts here to get info but on this topic I had to inquire.

So the guy you spoke with was willing to shoot someone over some electronics? The guy was running away there was no reason to shoot him. Thats not self defense any more. I am shocked the guy wasn't arrested for shooting him. If anything a warning shot in the air would tell the theif he meant business.

Guns should be only used to prevent physical harm to you or your family not to shoot a theif as they are running away with your precious tv that insurance would replace anyways. Even a criminals lifes is worth more then that.

It is quite funny reading all of these tough guy posts. Everyone is gonna start carrying a gun and shooting people over insults. Awesome. I spent some time over in Iraq and can tell you that once you point that weapon and pull the trigger there is no catching that bullet. So if you guys all want to shoot people I suggest sighning up for the military and head over seas, there is plenty of shooting for everyone over there. The guy who started this post and just ignored those (Contact Us Please) had the right idea. I am all for shooting bad guys, but offing some drunk cuz he doesn't like muskies?? Sounds a little extreme. All of these problems would be solved if people had good manners and did not feel so "entitled" to everything. I have seen most problems occur when some dirtbag from the cities comes up here and figures that since he is paying for his trip he should be treated like a god by everyone around him. People just need to relax and enjoy the water. Good luck all.

amen, except for the big city dirtbag comment.

I guess all of us city dirt bags could stop coming up to Mille Lacs, I am sure the resort owners won't mind.

Or some dirt bag not from the cities. Not all dirt bags are from the cities. I know this may be hard to believe but there are some nice people there. In fact I'm pretty sure there are some dirt bags from up north too.

Please note that I stated "some dirtbaG" not plural, and it is what I have personally witnessed. The last incident I saw a guy was screaming at another boater about he came up here from Edina over and over again. So I know full well that problem people can come from as far away as possible and or they come from across the street. I just was saying what I saw and heard. Please take no offense. I make a living off of people who spend money and money from the cities pays bills just as well as the local version. Again my apologies if some of you felt as though I grouped people from the metro in with the meatheads that cause all the problems. So how is the fishing been anyway??

I can requote it if you want, it still means the same thing.

What I don't get is why I have to read comments about folks from the city like that day in and day out. Non city people sure must feel that way otherwise it wouldn't end up in print on this website.

A good majority of us "city" people used to be your neighbors. I lived in northwest MN for 25 years and have all the values that come with growing up in a small town. I respect people, I treat people like equals, I lend a helping hand if someone needs one, and I'll wave to you when I pass on the highway. I haven't changed, I just live and work in the big city now. Guess I really, really like my job to put up with everything else that comes with big city living.

This has gotten waaaaaaaayyyyy off topic.

My interest in this discussion was about getting a weapon's permit should the worst case scenario happen to my family. Being a vet I appreciate other's that signed on the dotted line too. But ease off comparing what a father would do to protect his family and the scenario you depicted. Sure theres some bravado in these threads but it's harmless and kinda funny. I can think uber serious too so let's not be to quick to point to war. Having been through Desert Storm/Shield I wouldn't recommend going over there to anyone.

A little more info. The crook broke into his dad's home and ransack'd the place. Got caught inside by the guy coming home and threatened him at gun point. A tussle occurred and the gun was dropped. The bandit grabbed the goods inclusive of some family heirlooms and bolted out the back door. The son even though injured picked up the gun and ran out to try and stop the guy. He told him to stop and the bad guy threatened coming back another night. But he kept running until the the shot found home. I didn't want to add to much detail earlier. Lesson's learned. Don't steal someone else's heirlooms, don't go in someone else's house uninvited, don't carry a fire arm into someone elses house intending to hurt/maim or cause damage, don't pull the mask off the Lone Ranger and don't mess with good people that can shoot weapons! There will be ramifications and repercussions! But if you do decide to do this than you best find people that think this is to brutal and cruel and take their stuff. :>) I'd gladly keep my insurance company out of it.

Myself 35 years northern Mn; 0 years big city. The majority of people I have met from the cities, both in the cities and those visiting up north, are decent folks. But unfortunately it takes a few bad appels to rot the barrel. Along with the good we also get the bad. They have attitudes that we are living in Gods Country to serve them. They spend a lot of money and they should be treated like kings or they will take their money somewhere else. And then there are the loud abnoxious drunks. Dont get me wrong I have known and seen locals go to LOW and act the same way. It is also frustrating to have your normaly slow and peaceful hometown overcrowded every weekend by outsiders. We live here by choice and are still here working while you are here and after you leave. The few resorts and guides left may invite tourists in, but the majority of year long residents do not invite tourism we work in the woods, fields, factories, and shops that do not depend on tourism. So if we have a bit of an attitude about tourists come walk in our shoes for a few years.

papabear: Well said. Many will disagree though. It gets real annoying when I hear the "we bring money". I like many who live in any tourist area don't see a dime of the "big city" money. In fact I pay double for things like milk, bread, etc... because of the idea that cities people will pay it. The wages are low and the prices on everyday goods are high which in turn means less of the glitz and glamour for most here, so I wish that people would quit using that ridiculous excuse. So those who threaten to go elsewhere I say good, go, and keep going back.

Ya, give them the "Easy Rider" welcome!

I know I did not grow up in the far north, but in Elk River we had our fare share of weekenders stop in town on their way up north. As one of the "Good old boys" from town, we would hone in on outsiders. I feel now I was more of the problem than the solution.

Alot of the confrontations I have seen up at "Smokin Hill" have been on both sides of the fence. Somtimes, the same side of the fence. I just learned not to get involved and have fun. For krips sake, it's the weekend. Why ruin it with a trip to the county or city jail grin.gif.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
