Well I got out around Fargo yesterday for a couple hours, caught roughly 9 cats...biggest at 7lbs.

I saw a couple trailers at the access. Anyone else get out yet? It sure was nice to get back out again!

Figured that water couldn't stay up forever.

You guys need to send some of that rain further south and a little east, the Minnesota is dropping like a rock fast right now and will be getting very treacherous soon.

I might finally make it back up that way at the end of the month.

nice going Loren. The river's are finally dropping enough around here to provide for some decent fishing...

Yep, things are getting pretty darn managable around here. Fish should be headed into spawn mode very soon, so I'd suggest getting out sooner rather than later.

I gave it a try on sat. First time on the red with a boat, and it was a blast. I don't know why I waited so long. We fished from 5 to 9 pm and managed to only catch one cat, but it was worth it I landed a 32 incher have no idea what somehting like that weighs but it was solid. We are going to try again on tuesday night if things go right.

Scoot I noticed on your post you mention spawning. do cats spawn this late in the year?

We tried frogs, smelt, and cut suckers. The one we did manage to catch was on a chunk of smelt. What else should a guy try? Are scent sprays worth it?

ivegottabite and I got out on Saturday. We caught 7 cats mostly small ones largest one was 6 pounds that ivegottabite caught. Water conditions was good, not to much debree. There was alot of people out Saturday, not many catching any big ones that we talked too.

It was fun getting out with you John. Though we didn't get anything too big we caught some fish. The debri in the river wasn't bad, there is still stuff coming loose from boat traffic yet.

I am almost in agreement with Scoot, as the bigger cats seem hard to find right now. I believe that cats will spawn in June & July on the river, usually when the water temps hit 70+ from what I've been told and read.

I will be giving it a shot tonight as well, working the Mid-Town area. Icehole, where are you guys going to be fishing?

Yep, early July is a common time for fish to spawn around the Farg area. Like Loren said, somewhere around 70 or so. During spawn it's pretty tough to find anything but little fish. As far as bait, I typically prefer cutbait before spawn and frogs after- definitely not a golden rule, but a decent rule of thumb.

I'll be putting the boat in the water at johnson park andheading a little ways south. I think that my two boys with be with me. hoping to be out there about 5:30. Maybe see you on the water.

As far as debris I really didn't think it was that bad, but it was my first time in a boat on the red and really didn't know what to expect.

Hey i have used jsut about everything for bait but not a frog like u guys said, how do u rig frog jsut wondering i did hear an older fellow at the dam talking about using frogs for nice channels

For local fishing, I'll do a couple things- 1) I snout hook them, 2) sometimes I'll "open them up" with a knife, and 3) sometimes I'll snout hook them and add a leg to the hook as well (this looks goofy as heck and totally unnatural, but at times it works). I typically have a frog on a slip rig (like a lindy rig with a bell or no slip sinker), but sometimes I'll use frogs on stand up jigs, particularly later in the year. Backwater Eddy taught me the stand up jig trick and I've had a ton of fun with it over the past five or six years.

I tried a few of my spots lastnight and managed 3 little males. I tried frogs, goldeye meat. With nothing to brag about. Hopefully they snap out of this spawn mode and start prawling around for food.

Well i got out this morning for a bit and caught some small kitties with nothing to brag about, but did manage to catch 3 or so around 20-25 inches. I sure hope the big cats come out and play. I have to top my first cat, the 36 incher.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
