Issues with Prior....

Recommended Posts

Took a look in the trailer lot on Monday afternoon and counted 12 vehicles without trailers parked on the beach end of the lot - Obviously, beach users. People seem to be doing it more, unfortunately....

Man, that is just pathetic. I really wish our DNR or police would do something about that.

Ok, now this really gets me. Usually I don't have that big of a problem with getting a spot at Prior, but this past weekend I had to pay 20.00 on Sat and Sun to park my truck and trailer in the beach parking. First of all a car costs 5.00 so if i only take two spots with my truck and trailer, why the 20.00? Also there were 3 cars parked in the free trailer lot, one parked single in a double trailer spot. That just irks me.....I don't mind paying to park, but the 20.00 seemed like a little price goudging to me and no penalty for those parking card in the trailer lot is ridiculous... mad.gif

Toonfish, contact the city, specifically city council, the more of us who complain, the more likely they will get off their duffs and work with the DNR on this situation

I emailed the dnr and a Dan Breva replied with this,

Quote:

Parking at Public Water Accesses is often a problem. What we do is at accesses where there are parking stalls for both single vehicles and for vehicles with trailers, we ask that single vehicles park in the single vehcile stalls and vehicles with trailers use only the long pull-through sites designed for that use.

At Accesses where there are only long parking stalls, we cannot limit the parking to vehciles with trailers only in that a person using a car top boat or a canoe has equal opportunity to use the access parking as a person with a trailer. Also, a person trailering in a boat may have a friend who drives there to go with them on the boat and they are permitted to park at the access.

We know there is often more demand than capacity and that is why we look for additional opportunities to develop more water accesses.

However he forgot the part about the access I pointed out as being posted so I am not sure they will do anything.

have you contacted the local officer? Adam Block is his name. I contacted him about another issue (electronic predator calls) and he did contact his superiors. I had a couple good conversations with him, seems like a nice guy. Maybe start at the bottom, I bet Mr. Breva has no idea they posted that sign on the Dewitt access

I hope to see the city/DNR do something about this issue but I am not expecting much.

I have figured out a way around this issue and it involves rollerblades and some people confused as to why i park a trailer on their road :-)

The city already has said they won't do a thing since it is the DNR's parking lot. That was confirmed in an email to me from Frank Boyles, city manager

Question...if a person parks on the grass in the parking lot, will the city or the DNR ticket you??? I didn't think the DNR has ticketing authority over vehicle violations. Just something to think about.

By the way...I really appreciate all your guys's effort to increase the accesability and bring awareness to prior and other local lakes!!!

I see this all the time at the Prior lot.....sometimes I applaud the creativity, but then you get the (Contact Us Please) that parks half his trailer/truck up on the curb and the other half sits out to far in the turnaround and you cant get by him if you are pulling a bigger boat......I had to back up all the way from the end of the parking lot.... mad.gif

Just goes to show what a (Contact Us Please) Frank is, Last night I counted 16 cars at the sand point access. Sign says for access users only. I did watch a women with 5 kids walk from the beach to the access and get in their suburban and leave. The local CO and authorities need to monitor this more and why does Frankie not want the $5 from these people?

Can we start an "on-line" petition and send it to them? It is ridiculuos that they are allowed to do this!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
