As we feel the affect of a nasty cold front and easterlies for three days we look forward to soon warming temps and steady barometers. Anglers are coming in with mixed reports and mixed feelings about the infamous Upper Red Lake and all of her twisted ways. The anglers putting in pure fishing time are coming in very successful, card players and dice rollers are not doing so well.

The walleye bite decided to change time zones and peak from 10:30PM through 2:00AM. This went mostly unnoticed as many anglers felt the need to sleep, I’m guessing the guys staying up late did not wake their buddies and let them know about this.

Walleye would react to a good one two punch combo. One jigged spoon or rattling type lure along side of a dead sticked or bobber rigged minnow on a very small presentation. Walleye have been coming in to investigate the action of the jigged spoon only to turn away and pick up the dead sticked minnow on the way back to the bottom, this is a very common trick for cold front walleye on Upper Red Lake that has paid off for anglers willing to give it a whirl.

The crappies have begun to start showing themselves in small pockets attacking small minnows on glow green Demons, Forage Minnows and small Rattlin Varmits in both red and white colors as the sun just begins to dip below the horizon. Large schools light up the Marcums with a few selected fish beginning to feed as they pass through.

The pike waged war last week with the anglers of Upper Red, many fish caught in the 11-12 foot mark on smaller sucker minnows below tip-ups and jigged spoons. Main waves of attack came from 1:00PM until sundown.

The guys looking for perch are finding them over the small rock piles and heavy gravel bottoms in 9 feet of water. Best presentation has been a minnow head on a small green dropper rig or pounder jigs doing as the name suggest, pounding them on the bottom.

Good Luck and enjoy the outdoors
