NEW Aqua life bait station breaths new life into Minnows
Read any article, watch every television show, listen in to talk radio or chat to a fishing expert in person and you’ll soon realize the single most common word used in reference to live bait is “lively”. The reason the word often rolls off the tongues of these fishing aficionados? No matter the bait variety, anglers who use the healthiest, most energetic live bait are going to out-fish those who try and make do with the stale and frail. Yes, it’s as simple as that. Of all types of live bait, minnows, by far, are the hardest to keep vivacious. Extreme fluctuations in water temperature, impurities in too little water as well as the obvious expiration of oxygen can turn a bucket of once active little fishes into a container of floating bloaters. The answer to the dead minnow ... [ Read More ]
Overcoming the Classic Cold Front Bass Fishing
JOHN MURRAY'S TAKE ON COLD FRONT BASS FISHING, WARMING TRENDS AND EARLY SPRING Professional bass angler John Murray is no stranger to producing a livewell full of fish under pressure, despite the many curve balls Mother Nature can toss at him. More than $1.8 million in winnings earned over a 27-year tournament career is proof he can pick the right bait from his Plano tackle totes, no matter the circumstances. At this very moment, the 48-year old Arizona inhabitant is concentrating on every cast as he fishes his sixth Bassmaster Classic, which is being held on Alabama’s 69,000-plus-acre impoundment known as Lake Guntersville. The weather early on during pre-fishing was anything but stable, as last week’s arctic plunge with associated snow and ice did not spare the Lake ... [ Read More ]
Bartering, trading and why I think the dollar is REALLY losing value with people like me
So anyone who knows me will tell you that I have political opinions, but I don't share them, I don't debate, and I don't get on my soapbox with them. And I most certainly don't post them on Facebook: too many of my friends don't share my opinions and I truly don't want to lose friends over them. However. The things that affect my life directly - the ag laws, the restrictions on land use (think zoning and the places that dictate you need a minimum of four acres to be allowed to keep chickens - and no roosters!), the people who think that agricultural use of land should be something that doesn't occur in their back yard, the children growing up who think that food comes from the store, not farms... That kind of thing will have me spouting invective quicker than a goat ... [ Read More ]

Trophy Gilling
Trophy Gilling An early morning snowmobile ride to a trophy bluegill lake had me pumped. At minus ten below, it was a little cool out but little did I think that full face protection would be needed. It wasn’t that far. Well, yeah. Little did I think. I should have known better. Luckily the Bearcat had a high windshield and provided me a little shelter from the wind. I did, however, have to keep peeking over it, as it was crusted over with frozen road debris and hard to see. The ride, which approached unbearable, ended with us reaching our little back-in-the-bush honey hole and I could feel the pain. No frostbite was experienced but I had to be pushing it. Oh the lengths we go to catch big bluegills. Out on the lake, we found fishing to be slow but every once in a ... [ Read More ]
Meat rabbits – the early days!
During this cold weather (and yes, I know it's all relative, I live in the South. It's cold for the South!), I have been bunking up rabbits two to a cage so that they all have someone to snuggle to keep warm. Generally I pair mamas and babies, or youngsters two or three to a cage, but I found myself with a spare male/female New Zealand White combo and decided to put them in together. They've been living companionably for at least three months now, and I figured it was too cold for them to breed (fertility really tanks when the weather is cold) so I wasn't that worried about babies. However. When I went out to the barn this Sunday, I noticed that there was white fur sticking out of the front of the cage and immediately assumed the worst; I'd smelled a skunk while I was milking that ... In The Zone Migratory Spring Bass
As the late winter early spring time frame approaches giant bass start their instinctual journey from main lake basins folowing specific routes and finger ares toward secondary staging points. This is a time to take into consideration a few major factors to keep you on the largest fish in any systems you target. The combination of South winds pushing water temperatures up a few degrees, bass stalling on routes during high winds and cold fronts and the vertical stacking factor during these periods of unstable weather during the first stage of Spring, all must be combined with reading activity levels during specific daily bite windows.
