Grand Marais & BWCA fishing Report

Weekly Fishing Update.
by Bruce Kerfoot

February 28, 2000

The strange winter weather has created an unusual opportunity for Lake Trout fishermen on the Gunflint Trail. The warm weather has melted much of our snow (the first time in our 75 years on the Gunflint for this to happen in February) and the ice has lifted on the lakes. The ice is dry and solid. Today we have 24 inches on Gunflint Lake.

So the story of the day is the opportunity for fishermen to travel easily to all our trout lakes. You can walk across the ice without snowshoes or skiis, and the packed trails over the portages are hard enough to walk on (assuming a freezing night time temperature). It is a breeze to walk back to Tuscarora Lake for example, where it is normally a tough slog through the snow and slush.

The trout are hitting on fatheads and shiners in 15 to 25 feet of water. A few fishermen are working small jigs tipped with a small native minnow.

The trout on Gunflint and Saganaga Lakes are running from 2 to 10 pounds, while fish coming in from Tuscarora and surrounding lakes are running 2 to 4 pounds.
