Wow! Can you believe how nice Saturday was? It felt good to have some cooler temps on Sunday so I could wear long sleaves and not have my sun burn exposed smile.gif

Our group had great success on eater fish, limits where caught on both days. A meal ate Saturday night and many fish returned to the lake. Largest for the weekend was 16 3/4 average kept was around 14 1/2. Many many dinks let go.

We had our best luck on Lindy rigs with a yellow or gold hook and medium sized minnows. A few fish where caught on Leeches but we only used them when we ran out of Rainbows.

Our best fishing was in 25 to 35 FOW.

We focused in on Armstrong Bay in the mornings and over by Windy Island/ Indian Point durning the day. We also picked up a few real nice fish right off of Dog Island.

A few fish picked up on Rapalas early in the morning.

All in all it was an awesome weekend.

Cliff- I tried calling you again as my father in law was hoping to book you a 1/2 day on Monday. I know he is wanting to learn more about patterns on that side of the lake. I'm sure we will catch you eventually. Sorry it always such short notice.

What size and color rapalas are working? Last weekend i stuck with my favorite size 9 orange but only got 1 fish and i pulled it for probly around 2 hours total. I know my cousin got a limit on 7 orange. Hows the weather up there? Any rain? We hardly got any down here and a cold front is here now. Its only 38 degrees at my house right now frown.gif

I have always had my best luck with #7 or #9 floating Raps in 4' to 8' of water.

My best colors have been:

Black/silver

Blue/silver

Firetiger

Rainbow trout

Bright gold

Perch

Clown

In this order!

You will have to experiment with colors, size, and speed to see which one they prefer on any given day.

As a general rule I troll them as fast as possible without having the Raps jump to the surface.

Who needs a boat, left mine at home this year after 10+ years of opening on the Big V and fished with family and friends from shore, the wife and 2 young daughters could not keep up, it was great. The best part was watching everyone in the boats batteling the winds. I've been there, no fun when its your boat. Many eaters, largest released was 21" by the wife. Good luck to all, red color hook out fished all others by far, tiped with rainbows.

Cliff - Grandma was definitely happy. Always gotta make sure that she gets some of the catch, you know?

She did say that the walleye I gave her when we went ice fishing year before last was the best she'd had in years. Must be the cold water or something.

Wellesy - Sorry, I thought your family had that whole string of cabins down the point... yeah, they were a bit loud, but I could deal with the tunes, at least.

We're just up the bay from Glenmore... Old white/tan boathouse with a green door on it. My mom worked at your family's old cabin for at least one summer when she was younger. Sorry when that one burnt. I miss seeing it in the mornings when I'm on the dock.

Cliff,

Looks like you got everything but my favorite orange on that list. I have never tried trolling them fast ive always pulled them about as slow as possible while still getting action. IVe only tried size 9 this year but i do have a size 7 blue, ill have to buy a couple more before friday.

Slick - We used to own everything to Glenmore but as the overall family evolved we sold two off. We do miss Grandma and Grandpa's cabin...great place for the winter. We had sold that off as well but when the cabin burned down we bought the property back. Thankfully the bunk house is still standing. I'm thinking the noise shouldn't be an every weekend thing.

When abouts did your mom work for my grandparent's?

We used small perch raps on Sunday morning and they were on fire. cool.gif

Honestly, I don't know for sure when she worked for them.. probably early-mid '60's, I would guess.

I'm guessing that the noise won't be a regular thing either. It's the first time that I can remember it being that loud there.

Perch raps, huh?.. Hmmm... might have to put that in the memory bank. I made a run to Big Bay on Sunday morning, then ended up in front of our dock for a while. Definitely was a great weekend weather-wise. I just hope I can get back up there in the next few weeks. I know this weekend & Memorial are out, but maybe the beginning of June... *sigh* one can only hope!

Well, that was before my time then. The neighbors were new there last summer and have been pretty good overall. Now the fellow who had the place five or so years ago was a whole different story...lasted a year and the guy's folks got him out of there. blush.gif

Actually, I usually reach for the firetiger first with the dark water. The advice we got Sunday morning said to go small and the perch color was all I had for that.

I know perch has worked pretty well for me around Hoodoo area... but haven't trolled cranks at all this year yet.

She worked there before my time, too... LOL I would venture a guess that we're probably pretty close in age.

If you ever see a blue Crestliner with "Explorer" on the side, say hi.. it's probably me!

My brother has the black & white Fishawk... and then there's my unlce, who is running hie 1969 runabout. Can't remember the brand, but we put in a lift in the boathouse so that it can be used again, which is cool, seeing as how noone had a boat in it regularly since before Grandpa passed a few years ago.

You should build a new cabin on the old site. It would be cool to see something nice standing there again!

Slick - sounds like we are close in age...I'm 33 in August.

My parents have thought about building a new structure but I think that's on the back burner...would be nice to have a bigger winter place but the bunk house suffices for now.

I'll keep a lookout for ya!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
