is this the story about the ray's boat dock debacle??? or is the a different story??? if it is about ray's, that property is on the north end of the lake. the story should be on thursday evening on ch 9. ch 5 is supposed to be up here today doing a similar story. there is a very long posting on the mille lacs forum on another web site if anybody hasn't seen any info on this ordeal and wants to read up on it before the news story airs. there is a story in the mille lacs messenger about the dnr looking into buying the scenic bay resort in isle. they are asking $840,000 for that property. i think that amount of money would fix up a few of the existing accesses that are in need of repair/dredging.............tom fellegy

Tom,

You are right, 9pm on the Channel 9 news there will be a story on the Boat landing. It's worth the time so we can see where our tax dollars and license dollars are going.

Thanks!

If it's about the east side then it will about the liberty beach public access. Liberty beach was sold about two years ago and when the owners sold the sold the harbor to the dnr.

from my understanding the story will focus on the Poor choice in the liberty beach access, i guess it is shallow and unprotected. i have only seen it in the winter so i don;t really know how poor of a site it is. but i totally agree with the idea of fixing up the ones they have. heck wealthwood is basically worthless, why not make a channel, and malmo isn't much better, and the casino access has more huge potholes than any access around. confused.gif

I know first hand about the Casino access and potholes. We turned of the highway and were going toward the landing and the boat trailer hit a pothole. It sent that sucker(1750 fish Hawk) a good foot in the air came crashign down and broke the wheel cover right of the trailer.

SO yea I think they should improve alot of the access. The access in Isle will be useless by mid-summer if they don't start dredging it

Launching a boat at the "casino" access is easy, that's if the tiny harbor isn't full of boats. The big problem there is even in a normal water year it's a max of 3 feet deep for 100 yards into the lake. The access by McQuoid's will be real shallow this year too. Then there's the Big Point access where if there's a 2 mph west breeze it slames your boat into the dock or trailer.

DNR Trails and Waterways really needs to build harbors on Mille Lacs so people can safely load and unload boats.

How is the casino access? Is the low water level going to ding some props going out that 100 yards thru the 3' gauntlet?

Haven't been there in a couple years...but it was shallow then.

Will the bigger deep v's get in and out?

I think Ch.9 did a good job on that story i can't believe they would waste a half milllion on another shallow worthless launch. I got some brief airtime i was the guy holding all the fish in the pics at the beginning of the story. i just wonder what they wil do with that site, i sure hope they dredge a channel. confused.gif

KSTP (5) will have this story tonight.

Does anyone know if the money for this project comes from the general fund? If it does.... more than just us fishing folks should be PO'd.

It's a good thought but terrible planning. I've never fished mille lacs, but i've been on winnie a ton, and it's pretty similar. There's only one access site i know of on winnie (the deer river access) that's always calm, but that launch is plenty deep. I saw the story last night, and couldn't they just solve the problem w/ some dredging?

They could dredge but they would have to go 100 yards into the lake then do it once a month. The wave action will fill in any channel that is dredged.

Part of my issue with live bait is that it generally results in a higher hooking mortality than artificial does, especially in the heat of summer.  95% of what I catch is intended to be released, so in order to maximize that, it helps to avoid using live bait.  I'm not saying you can't accidentally kill a fish with artificial that is deep hooked, because you certainly can.  But as a general rule, they are more often hooked in the mouth with artificial.   The cost is also ridiculous for some live bait too.  Crappie minnows and waxies aren't bad, but when you start talking shiners, jumbo leeches, and decoy suckers...it gets out of hand quickly.  The last time I bought a big decoy sucker for muskie fishing years ago, they were $14 each.  15 bucks for a dozen shiners and half of them are dead by the time you get to the lake?  Take my left arm too why don't ya.

End of April is my guess for lakes along the I90 corridor.

Great.  Have to swing by soon to see what they have, then over to Petti Bros for some jerky and sticks!

Great news. They opened last Wednesday. Sounds like it’s about twice as big. Looking forward to checking it out soon.

Last weekend I was monitoring a bay on Tonka whether people were still driving out. I saw 6-7 vehicles. In one spot there were 4 trucks with 3 wheel houses. One of the houses was 20 ft+. On Sunday I arrived to see the sheriff put up a thin ice sign that 6 vehicles had driven past.   I returned to fish it last Wednesday late afternoon with 4 vehicles already out. Drove to the spot I fished 2 other times in the last month and drilled the first hole. LiveScope showed the fish 30-50 feet away. Drilled a cluster of 5 holes in that spot and game on. It was almost as fast as you could put your line down. A lot of up bites. After it slowed down on the small jigging spoon, I switched to a 4mm tungsten jig and caught more. The fish shifted 10 feet away once where one of the other holes was and then went back to the initial hole. For crappie, I ended up with a 13, a couple 12s, couple 11s, three 10s and a handful of 9s. Also 4 bluegill either side of 8” plus several smaller of both species. All fish were released. The pictures I posted are the 13 with me, both 12s an 11 and a dink. I measured them on a Li’l Dipper which is accurate from the middle of the hole at the top of the handle. I am going to order a Ketch board. The rod for the tungsten jig is a Tickle Stick and for the spoon a Panfish Sweetheart.   All three times I’ve fish this spot the big fish move out about 60-90 minutes before dark. I suppose they are moving to a different area (weedline?) to feed. If I get out to this spot again this year I’ll try and figure out where. When I drove off the bay there were still 6 other vehicles out.

Yup. Bullseye on the Ricochet . Bit o simple St Pats humor as that’s how I live n guess this flows thru my fingers.   Always interesting to see how close guesses are here.   where my island is clears out before the bay n large sections of lake so that is fun also. In past a few times last 28 years I hit it right on. Silly icy fun Big Smiles n Keep on Rocken! T

8 degrees in Rochester this morning.    looking at the 10 day forecast for Cook, not much melting going on out to the end of next week.
