fished rose twice last year and got some nice eyes each time. Seemed that most of the fish were deep. Got one that went about 7 lbs. Beautiful lake

It is also a very tricky lake to stay on the structure when it is very windy.

Seems like every time we go there it is windy, but we still find a few fish.

nice norts out there...got one one year getting blown off of my spot went from 10 to 50 feet and never let line out and it bit. 12 or 13 lbs. fun fight. lots of structure takes a while to find everything look for points and start there. There is a sunken island that is fun...black jig head...orange Twister...Minnow (sucker small) and you'll have 4lb norts most of the day.

I see on the map its a deep clear lake,a guy told me that the lake shuts down on the eyes around mid Jun, is this true, Ive been wanting to get over there and fish this lake for a couple of years but just has never worked out, Has anybody fished them suspended in that deep water?

That is the thing about that lake -- one second you are on fish in 18 feet, then you are blown off so far it is 50 feet of water.

It is a challenge.

Ok now has anybody noticed baitfish flipping out of the deep water in the evenings,I ask all this because there is a lake up here that we troll 50-105 feet of water at night fishing down anywere between 8-24ft and do well on the eyes one night I was bs'ing with some divers over a cool one at the landing and they told me about Rose and what they see in it when they dive, and it is a very similar lake and I HAVE to try it, the short of it is there are some (alot) of HUGE eyes in there guys. I think what we do up here will work there.

YES!! They are out there. On another lake i watched a guy release a walleye that would have went over 11 lbs doing this trolling over deep water, he showed me how and thats how i learned. Im not great at it, but getting better.

THose fish are chasing tulibees in the summer over deep water. If you pass over the deep water you will see tons of arcs. I will one day get set up to troll open, deep water and get on those eyes in Rose. I may even get a downrigger for it.

Are those arcs, say at about 24 feet early ie before sundown then start coming up shallower until they disappear off the locator. The lake up here you get eyes off the typical walleye structure early untill about the 3rd week in June then it gets real slow on structure then I pull out deep. How the landing there are there lights to get back to it at night, Ive been on unfamiliar water at night and spend a long time looking for the landing.

I don't think there is really a lot of equipment that you need fisherdog. You must have a couple of trolling rods, a nice selection of cranks and a dive chart...that should do it. When the water temps are at a certain level most of the action is in the top 20 feet of the water column. I'm on vacation for four out of the next five weeks and plan on getting on this pattern at a different lake. I'll let you know how I do if you're interested.

Ya get some trolling rods with some diawa accudepth 27 rods and put a mono filler on the first couple hunderd yards then end with 125 years of fireline. In most trolling situations you will use a max of 200 Feet of Line. the trollers bible is a great tool. YOu look up your lure, compare it to line type and bingo if you want your #7 sahrap to run at 18 feet it will tell you how much line ot run out. However, make sure you reel is full to the top and if you have 2 have identical amounts of line otherwise the line counter will not be accurate. Since we are only allowed one line per angler in MN you probably won't need planer boards uless you have more than 2 people in the boat. IN ND you can use 2 lines per person, put 3 people in the boat and watch out for the confusion of 2 lines in the back and 2 lines on each side of the boat with 2 boards on each side. it takes lots of Practice to keep from getting massive tangles.

I say "a couple of trolling rods" only because it always seems that if someone jumps in with you they don't have one. And yes...those Daiwa reels are sweet aren't they?? My uncle just had to get one last year after he seen mine. smile.gif

Would the other lake be in Hubbard County by chance? Equipment I mostly use bait casts anyway and trolling all I do is count the times the level wind crosses at night I hold my finger there and count the times it touches it. and of course we want to know, I should hookup with someone here to ge experiment on Rose with.

I am interested in trying this as well and looking for some area lakes that allow for some "deep basin" trolling.

Do these fish hang out during the middle of the day or is it more towards evening? I have found it tough to find fish during the day trolling.

The when they hit question depends a lot on the lake, Ive been on some that during the day you see them on the locator but its like they have lockjaw then evening comes and you see them starting to move up shallower, but still in the deep water, and start hitting, daytime is tough. I prefer night and the light of the moon, during the days I use downriggers but not at night. Id begame to hook up with you when I go try Rose that lake just intrigues me I just think that it could be one of those deep water sleepers there are a lot of lakes out there that really hasnt been tried in the deep yet,more and more people are begining to tho and Id rather find the lake than here about it. Its just like the bite by time you here about it its over YOU have to make the bite everyone heres about.

There are a few lakes in the area where the trolling bite can be awesome. Rose, Long, Pelican, Otter Tail(So I've heard) and Big Sand (Hubbard Co.) I prefer silver shad raps and also the largest cisco colored stick baits. Boards are nice and multiple anglers in the boat is the ticket. My old land lord's kid landed a 13.2 walleye open watering on a DL area lake that will remain annonymous. However I've named the lakes that I usually fished.

Timing is key. Full moon periods are best, as well as water temps that focus tullibee near the surface, in otherwords the water temps need to be relatively cool, but not cold. Otherwise you will have to go deeper, which can be achieved with inline weights.

Ill be in Canada in Jun and Jul so that full moon the end of Jul might have to be the try out of Rose. I have to find a job where I can fish everyday how cool would that be!!!!!!!

I fished rose on sunday. The water temp was 42 degrees and the eyes were not cooperating. Caught a few 15 in slimers. I think that it will be few weeks yet.

thats what i figured the water temp is playing a big role now. bak2mn i am heading up to badmedicine sat morn early season up there can be a blast but the water temp i'm sure will be the key up there to.

we only got one trout and missed 9 and one slimer. the water was cold. but was cool to watch the eagles fishing up there and the loons would just sit five feet from the boat. I am going to take the youngest to rose today and see if we can find some fish will post later how we do

MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

      On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
