AK_Man,

Welcome to FM and the Vermilion Forum! smile.gif

I am sure that I bought a lot of your bait from Bill's Bait Shop when he had it open in Tower! shocked.gif

I'm glad that this became one of the bigger threads lately. I have gained a lot appreciation for folks that have been up there longer than me, and those like myself that are newer to the region. As I close down my laptop and let it all melt away on my drive up tonight, I'll think about many of the memories shared here.

Thanks...and may your fish count match your beer count this weekend.

You guys are making me home sick, I transplanted my self to alaska 23 years ago. I miss the bait, runs selling leaches to Bills Bait in Tower. Then fishing V and the run back to the west central prarie that night. Can't wait to get back.

This isn't one of the Cook's is it???? If so you should be able to figure out who this is.

What I like best about the big V!

1. The diversity of the walleye bite early in the year. Shallow (4-8 ft) mornings and evenings and the deep (25-40ft)jigging mid-day.

2. My secret crappie spot that gives up 12-15 inch crappies early in the year.

3. The automatic dock bite at the end of the day. Nothing better than an automatic walleye bite in a lawn chair with a beer in hand as the sun sets!

4. The accidental smallmouth we always catch catch fishing walleyes. The best bonus fish in the world (C&R).

5. The bamboozle pizza at the VC. If you have not had one you need to have one. 36 inches of good pizza. A bunch of fun with a crew of guys.

6. The people in the area. Other than one local who didn't appreciate 612ers invading his lake, the people in the area are great. They will give you ideas on where to fish, will help you if you have a problem with your boat and are generally very nice.

7. The access to Trout Lake. When the lake is "on" its as good as it get for size and numbers. When its "off" there is quick access to other lakes that are full of fish.

If it was not so darn far far from the cities I'd buy a place up there. I love visiting the lake!

Hopefully we will see you up there!

I would agree wit Walleye Guy about the wonderful diversity. I've been so happily surprised that i dont have to fish in 30ft. to catch walleyes these last 6 years.

However, even better than the fishing which is outstanding most days; is what Vermillion has done for me and my father personally. I'm sure a lot of people have some key enjoyment that brings them together with a loved one. For the last 6 years Vermillion has been that enjoyment for us.

I have not been the church going type in my past, but I truely thank God for every minute that we get to spend on Vermillion together. Rain or shine Vermillion will always be our little piece of heaven on earth.

It's been a real pleasure to read what you all have had to say and they are all great insights not just about fishing but about life.

See you on the lake!

Favorite aspect...not sure, so many. However, I do enjoy sharing a few favorite spots with fellow FMer's here. Really quite nice to mooch some coffee, munchies, or a beer now and then. But we've changed boats, so this year will be interesting.

Going covert at 7 Sisters.

Why the change in the boats?

We need to make a Gold run this year... I'll drop you a line & give you the travel iternerary for the summer, see if we can hook something up!

With the great Canadian shield scenery, diversity in fishing opportunities, and the sound of the loons at night, it's hard to pinpoint just one aspect. All I can say is that even though I'm only on the lake a few weekends each year, I check this forum every single day just so I can "feel" like a local smile.gif

Late September when the loons and eagels are staging for the flight. The steam rising off the water in the AM. Standing on the east point in front of the cabin hookin those dark golden eyes.

Oh cabin I hear you calling, I'm on my way. grin.gifgrin.gif

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
