went out tonight in the chaska area and searched an area loaded with dead elms and found zippo--looked a little dry yet. My bro checked an area in belle plain and found a dozen and some were already drying out. He ate them tonight and it seems he is now alergic to them--his last 2 times eating morels(fresh and dehydrated) he has puked his guts out an hour after eating them. We ate hundreds of them last year and no problems. These were NOT false morels. It is kind of wierd all of a sudden he is alergic. I feel bad for him since he loved to eat them---only good thing all the good spots we found are now all mine. grin.gif

Hey Jeff,

Was your brother drinking with the morels? I have heard that alcohol combined with morels can cause that problem for some people. It has given me an upset stomach...but never made me puke.

I had the same thing happen to me, it took one trip to the hospital, to have some awsome tasting charcoal. And two seperate pukings for me to convince my self I couldnt eat them anymore. Although I really love the taste of them. I may try it again, I may have grown out of it. grin.gif or not confused.gif

They had me worried there for a bit Gus. I started thinking these morels aren't all people make them out to be.

Im sure I was drinking beer all 3 times I had the problem. I love the taste of them, maybe Im up for another try, this time without drinking. I will be out looking for them early next week, hopefully I can eat them without any problems.

I drove to Iowa yesterday to drop off the dog for his training and took a "little stroll" into the woods.

BINGO. Found plenty of yellows. Left the girlfriend sitting in the car and she was plenty mad when I returned. I'm still

weighing the pros and cons of my decision of taking the walk! Good luck to all.

Found about a dozen tiny grays today, west metro. Hopefully the rain that is forecasted comes. If it does, it should be good next week. Happy hunting!!

How far north do these Morels go. I live near I Falls and I hear all this talk about Morels. I would love to try. Earlier I posted I wanted to buy some and the only response I got was go to a farmers market if someone can find me a farmers market within a 1 hour drive of I falls that would be great. Other than that I still would love to buy and try some of these. Anyone willing to sell and ship some up. Let me know. Thanks guys. laugh.gif

dockboy You'll probably have to come south a bit to get into some; Bemidji area i know gets a reasonable amount of them. It takes alot of walking though. If you really want to buy some go on ebay search title and description morel mushrooms there is many many for sale; I would say your 25$ for 1# fresh shipped is fair. You can also buy dried morels on ebay year long then around 7$ per oz shipped would be fair priced. Otherwise you can buy them at major grocery stores ( I KNOW YOU ARE IN IFALLS NO BIG STORES FOR MILES)but they are at least 9$ per 1/2oz and they are real little. Sorry for rambling I hope this helps.

Went out for an hour this morning to an early hotspot and found just over 300 greys (1-4 inches) and about 25 yellows all around one large dead elm---game on.

I was near belle plain.

I was down in Iowa last Wednesday and picked about 15 lbs of them. Sold 5 lbs for 11.00/lbs and ate and shared the rest. I only found 2 little grays yesterday around Clairmont, MN and about 25 down by Winona, MN. All these were the tiny little grays. MushroomspickedinIowaonStevesplace5.jpg

I also found this nice 150's class Whitetail that was lost by a bowhunter with the arrow still stuck through the carcass. 5-2-07BowkillfoundinSwitchgrassatRo.jpg

I won't have any for sale until we start popping some numbers down here. Looks like we might get the rain tonight or tommorow, but only 50% chances. I will be in the Owatonna area again tommorow and may be able to get a load then if I'm lucky.

In the St. Cloud area we received about a 1/4" of rain on Friday and another 1/4" of rain on Sat. How long does it take for the morels to start popping after a rain?

Found four in my brothers landscape wood shavings. I was dropping off a battery and mentioned we were going to look for morels and he says, "Glad you said that, what are these?" Apparently his wife also smashed some with her foot a while back saying, "...what are these mushrooms doing here?" Found only three more later. All seven in south metro.

We found 1/2 dozen blacks south of Grand Rapids today. They were real small and must of popped up after we finally got some rain Friday night. The woods are still real dry and we could use a good soaker. The dry conditions did'nt seem to hurt the wood tick population at all as they were sure thick.

Just curious what kind of habitat a person should look for morels in around Itasca county. I grew up in farm country and have had no real success locating them up north. Not looking for anyones spots, just general info on what kind of trees/soil conditions/terrain etc. I should concentrate on. Thanks.

I found nine greys yesterday! Hopefully the sun or humidity goes up and it should get better.

We picked on Saturday around a hundred in south east Morrison County.

picked 176 yesterday, a mix of yellows and greys. Public land in Carver county. All were around dead elms with moss and or grass around them. The elms with just dirt or leaves at the base were unproductive, maybe too dry. I fried up a bunch, the rest went into the dehydrater. I hope to make it out again midweek.

I'm with Peder on this. Never found anything around leave covered ground near elms, but today we did hit the jackpot with the morels growing out of the moss near dead elms.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
