yea your right practice is the key first day down there when i caught no fish i lost 3 jig heads on rocks, but once you set the hook into a fish it gets alot easier to tell what is what. good luck. I wont be down there till next week because I will be getting ready for the opener up north.

It was alot slower last night. Still some nice fish caught. I ended up with only 2 last night, one walleye and one smallie.

The crappie where in the mouth of the creek for a little while atleast. A few guys were fishing for them and probably pulled out 10-15 of them between 4 guys before the bite stopped.

One nice walleye was caught by the concrete water outlet, I would guesstimate it in the mid 20's.

The carp were also thick last night. Within 15 mintues I had foul hooked 3 of them, nothing was landed but I did pull a few scales off of them. One of the carp I hooked out toward the main channel must have been between 20-30 lbs, it got a little upset when I hook it and jumped out of the water. Thankfully it came unhooked beucase it was pulling line on me like crazy, there is no way I had the gear to handle a fish like that.

I also ended up missing so many bites last night, I would have the fish on for 10 seconds and then they would just be gone. I tried tweaking my presentation a little but it didn't seem to help. Lost more fish in 3 hours last night then I did all last year I think.

Seems there is no real pattern right now either, walleye were coming from the current seam and from real shallow slack water and everything in between. And it was just one here and one there no big numbers.

Last night really proved that you'll never know what a night at the river will hold in store for you.

Awesome report! Sounds like the cats will be very close behind! Time to hit the old cat spots!

Hey nofish - did you see a Jon boat go by? That was me and BigMike. It was a slow day for us as well. Prolly 15 small smallies, 1 walter, 1 pike, 1 sheepie. There were 2 guys fishing on that concrete slab and when we drove by one of them had a smallie in the net. I yelled Woo Hoo as we went by.

We both lost a nice fish and I think I snagged a carp for a split second as my rod made a C, felt a thump thump, then the hook popped out. I was hoping it was a king kong smallie, but prolly carp

Yeah I saw you guys go by.

I heard some decent reports of some nice smallies from the dam area.

There wasn't as many people out as I thought there would be last night.

Just wondering why this thread has not been moved to the Pool 2 forum.

It is not the end of the world, sure has caught on good in the "Minnesota" forum. Minnehaha is very close to Minnesota, due south. I do believe who ever started this thread my have thought "Minnesota rivers", not Minnesota River". Just a possiblity. I enjoy reading posts.

I haven't been down there since Sunday and i won't make it tonight. I think I am going through withdrawl.

I have been making atleast 3 trips a week down to catch some fish. Sunday was my first trip with no fish in a long time.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

      No, that wasn't me.  I drive a 621 Ranger.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
