Im guessing the pike are after, smelt, suckers and what few trout are in the lester. It is unusual to see that many in there thats for sure. Almost as unusual as catching a sturgion in there like those kids say they did a few years back. Pic made the paper. Turns out it was caught in the Louis and dumped in the lester.

The pike are in there spawning. A big one rolled up in my line and was full of loose eggs.

Odd that pike would be spawning in the lester...terrible pike spawning habitat. Is anything happening there steelhead/looperwise?

baptism water temp reading was at 60 degrees fahrenheit, at high noon today. Not good! still managed to pull a few steelies and loopers out though. waters real low too. probably has dropped 1 to 1 1/2 ft. since this past weekend.

I don't believe it I need to see a picture. Also what did this supposed imaginary walleye hit cuz if it was a yarn fly then I believe it even less. Either way I think you are full of crap tongue.gif

hey wal-i-princess, tongue.gif I'll send the pic to your phone if you are a doubter.

Anyways, we fished the shore from canada to two harbors hard the last three days. The water is getting really low but we found a lot of fish. Yarn was the ticket in the rivers which was surprising since i ussually do better on flies when the water warms up or gets low. I did get a big clipped steelhead in front of the french this afternoon on the way back home. And I also got to meet fellow FMer Chadwick and a couple guys who felt it was a good idea to stand elbow to elbow with guys who were fly fishing. one of em almost learned the hard way. tongue.gif

4-28-07 Split Rock River. Not mine but the guy that caught it was gracious enough to let me hold it for the pic.

It was our 1st time for Steelhead and we own a cabin only 1.5 miles away from the location I'm standing in blush.gif

Anyway a guy who knew what he was doing wandered by and said, "Hey one is laying right in midstream." Sure enough it is right in midstream in fast water in about 18" of water.

My poor neice had been dragging a crawler past its nose for 3 hours. My buddy trys a spawn sack a dozen times and nothing. The guy asks if he can try and uses a yellow yarn fly which it hits after about a dozen trys. He loses it in about 4 seconds. The fish goes right back to the same spot and this time 2 mins later he goes for it again and gets the net.

It was his 4th fish of the day and only keeper he said.

We did witness a twin get caught 100 yards farther up and 2 other guys said they had caught fish but we did not see it.

The second pic is at the mouth of the Beaver. The guy said it was the 1st fish he had caught all weekend.

The last two pic's are of the Gooseberry and just for giggles.

I learned a lot. I'll be back next year with proper gear.

Wow, thats a nice catch! Wish I could pull up a beauty walleye like that when I was fishin for steelies. I was out a couple days ago and found some luck for steelies in upstream pools of a few streams pass the french. Landed my personal best, a 25" steelie but dropped my phone in the water was I was trying to get a pic, stupid! Was a good fight on a #6 wieght flyrod anyway.

Kent, I believed you before you posted the picture...unlike the rest of these doubtful rascals. smile.gif

I got a 28" eye while fishing down on the WI Rush a couple summers ago. I've also seen a gar in a SE MN trout stream that was a good ten miles upstream from the ole Miss. That's the great thing about rivers, you never know what you are going to catch.

Sorry Wally, I don't post specific north shore rivers. Anyways, actually targeting walleyes in the tribs is still illegal before opener, he got it drifting for steelhead. The river was located between silver bay and canada, you'll have to figure the rest out from the picture. grin.gif The funny thing is that Porter was disapointed that it wasn't a steelhead!

HaHa, I didn't notice that you could tell he was shirtless in the pic. He got a little warm disassembling his back seat to get the keys that he locked in the trunk. laugh.gif Too Funny!

Awww, yeah. The pin can't be stopped. I thought it was mad at me because i've been carrying the drift rod with it. You know, the pin doesn't play well with others.

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
