Speaking of that.... A couple of years ago I went to the weigh station in ramsey and was walking the shore line when the water was really low and I came up through the wood and saw.... How would you say one man enjoying another mans man hood.... All I could say was a few words that I can not repeat. I went to the weigh station and told them what I saw and all they could say was not again. Dont plane on going there any more....

I stopped there a few times last summer to and from a job I was on to get a few cast's in the water, between the assorted men's? underwear and guy's sitting in car's I'ld hate to be there when the sun is going down. I've been told they have had so many problems there it's a "must stop" for the Sherrif's dept. Welcome to the great outdoor's, downtown Mpls is moving to the country. mad.gifmad.gif

Elk River Police are doing all they can to clean the area up, they want people... normal people grin.gif... to use the park to scare away the riff raff, the state of MN was going to close the park and the landing but the city of ELk River bought it from them. If your down there and you see anything suspicious going on (two guys from seperate cars walking into the woods with no fishing pole in hand) call the ER police, the more people they bust for this behavior the more the word gets out its not tolerated down there anymore

  • 2 weeks later...

I have never fished carp, what do you guys use for a set up and bait? Since there is nothing else open this time of year, I was thinking of trying to fish for some rough fish.

I don't know if it works this early in the year, but corn (stays on the hook better if you cook it a little, add sugar if you do) or oatmeal work very well for carp. If you throw a crawler out you should catch redhorse left and right, maybe some carp too.

Is chumming (with corn) for carp illegal? If it is in MN, is it illegal on the MN/WI border also?

Well I just wrote nice post about my life growing up in ER and the decline of Babcock park, but my lap top battery went dead and lost it all. Will post more about this later. The park is getting better in last 8-10 months, because of ER finest. I know for a fact, when I was in high school in the late eighties and early nineties. This stuff would of never occurred down there. The guys I grew up with, would of been down there every day Kicking the @#$@$ out of people who do the circle thing in public. Old men or not, no body would of been safe. Times have changed and people are more afraid of being sued and kids now a days from ER are not farm boys and girls. They do not care. I am not afraid of going down there and giving my verbal advise to the old men sitting in there cars after coming from the woods doing what ever they do. My wife thinks I am nuts, but I go right up to them and say some choice words. They are easily scared. When they find out they are caught by someone who is not police and could kick the crap out of them, they get scared. They almost run me over trying to get away, when they find out I am not a queen hunk. Up until two years ago I would take my kids down there fishing and I tell you what! Nothing sets me off more than seeing that !*&^% going on with my kids next to me. I have made hundreds of trips down to Babcock over my life time and since it has gotten bad the last seven years, I go some wares else. It is a shame it took so long for this to go public. I have heard if you search Google or yahoo go Minnesota gay hot spots, Elk River Babcock park comes right up. 7 plus years ago the Asians almost ran you out. I never had problem with them. They would travel up from city's in packs and camp out there. I would give them my suckers and carp. They were respectful of the park. They too have been driven out by the old man circle/pick up jerks down there. It is a shame!

SHACKBASH

P.S.

This time of year, I would use night crawler for cats under bridge. I would ball them up on a plain hook (usually after suckers would bite ends off of crawler’s) keep putting more on. The mouth of the Elk River (in a boat) is a good spot for cat fish this time of year. I do know of a place where the Mississippi bends north, that you have a chance of over a 20 lbs cat at. This is one spot I will not let go, or maybe I did. Good luck!

river rat316,

I graduated in 96. I should of graduated in 95. I was held back in readiness before first grade. I stated the late eighties because I ran with the older groups, like the Beckers and others. Also I did start Junior high school in 1990. Did you go to Elk River?

ozzie,

I did say the 8-9 months it has been getting better. 2 years ago it was bad. The boat launch area always has been a better area, but I have buddies that have seen bad things in the woods to your right by creek. Most of what used to go on would happen to the right of creek. At on time on a summer day it would be going on all over place.

P.S.

I never got along with Ken in high school. Now that I am older and see him around town things are different. I could not imagine running a high school now adays. It is just like a minny prison, with all the shootings that have gone on in past ten years. It sure ain't them same from when we were young.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
