Fishing report

Maybe they nailed their holes shut so the seals could not get into the fish house. Personally, I take the risk of seal attack and fish through an open hole. That usualy increases a guys odds of catching fish. wink.gif

Ahhh yes, there is all of the bashing I have come to expect from the URL forum if somebody speaks thier mind. Oh and of course you are all better fishermen than I or any of my buddies are, I didn't post a posative report so instantly the name calling and gossip starts up. I do not have to justify myself to any of you. For most of the people who responded and trashed me one way or another this original post wasn't even for you, it was to give a heads up that the calls of "all is fine and the fish are still jumping through the holes, grab your wallet and get up here.

I am not posting any more on this heading because I know that alot(not all), but alot of the guys that post on this particular forum like to try to bully people around. I would say that this name calling and attacks are even more sad than my last fishing trip. I thought this site and forum were a place to share info and reports, but I guess I was wrong.

What happened to "fishing reports" and tips to other guys on what you should do or not do??? Yes there is still some reports on this forum but most of the postings are just gossip, sorry to all of you I offended with a fishing report.

We had a slow Saturday only catching 5 walleyes no crappies, moved less then a 1/2 mile away and on Sunday 3 of us caught over 30 walleyes in 4 hours! all nice 16"-21".

Fireball, let us all know when you find a lake that can match that kind of action along with the quality size. 3 weeks ago 2 of us caught 50 walleyes the same size in 1 1/2 days. I drive 250 miles to get there, and it is worth every mile!

fireball, What if I drive to the Twin Cities to go to a Twins game because I heard that they have a pretty good team. Then when I get there Santana gives up a homer in the 3rd, Mauer lets a ball get passed him for another run in the 5th and then when we're down 2-0 in the bottom of the 9th Mourneau gets up to bat with 2 runners on and he strikes out! Does that mean that Santana is a bad pitcher? That Mauer is a bad catcher? That Mourneau is a bad hitter and the Twins are a bad team? That those people from the Twin Cities are just lying to us about the Twins so we'll go down there and spend our money?

No, the Twins just had a bad day playing but I still had a great time and it sure beats going to work. cool.gif

fireball you didn't just give a fishing report,,you bashed URL. frown.gif

Fireball,

I'm thinking these guys are this way because you said "the lake sucks" in one word or another. Trust me it's not your fishing report! I will usually have 1 or 2 "bad" trips a year where I don't hammer the fish. Heck, I had a trip this past summer where I got skunked. I maybe get skunked 2 times a year at the most, and I fish alot...But, that's fishing. Yah, I was frusterated, but I know not your not going to catch alot of fish on every trip, and once in a while a guys gonna get skunked that's fishing. Even the best fisherman in the world have "off" days, where it seems they can't do anything right to catch the fish they want. Again not all my trips are awsome, but of the 6 or so trips I have taken up there this year, one trip was slow. The percentage of good trips compared "bad" trips isn't even close, so I'll keep coming back...

Now you can keep a measly 2 of them and you cant even get 2 caught for each person much less 2 keepers, sad.

Just let me ask you one legitimate question fireball. You drove 5+ hours to fish knowing you could only keep two walleyes, and then you drive 5+ hours back home and start complaining about only being able to keep a "measley" two walleyes? Wow. I just wish I could understand why people in this state start foaming at the mouth just to be able to say they "limited out". Don't get me wrong, I love a meal of fish, but I never have more than a meal or two in my freezer, and when thats gone, I may keep a fish or two next time out. This state seriously needs a statewide slot and a reduction on limits in my opinion. Just look what the special regulations have done for lakes such as URL, LOW and countless others across the state. -LaVoi

I think that for most people that have fished url have seen how fishing can vary from house to house, and even hole to hole in a house. 3 of fished sunday morning for a couple of hours and got limit of eyes, 3 crappies and a dozen released walleye, all out of 2 holes in a house with 8. No bites in the other 6 holes

We had a rental house the guys wanted to move over 6 feet tonight. Guys on the north side catching fish one after another, guys on the south side had two. Sometimes all you can do is shake your head and wonder.

Fireball, I feel your pain. But, i am looking forward to my next trip back to URL. Too much fun to not go. My wife wants to go up when we are going to "spank 'em", told her she has to roll the dice with the rest of us as I have no control over what the fish gods have in store for us. But, it is always an adventure. Sometimes you win, some times you lose. Hope you give it another shot, if not, you will not be missed....

I took the little lady up for the first time this last weekend. She had never been to URL. Went out of Hillman's in one of their sleepers. The action was fast and furious between 6:30-8 both in the morning and evening. Spotty the rest of the day. We ended up with 2 limits of nice eyes and 9 crappies. The smallest crappie was 13", largest 14",I still can't get over the size of those crappies. I don't care if I lose acouple fingers to seals, i'm still reaching down to grab 'em!

Chris and my Pre-Slabfest scouting trip was a success. After lots and lots of holes drilled we did pretty well on crappies, eyes and perch. That's all I'll post until Chris gets the official report thread posted.

You can't always slam them! I was up this weekend with my kids and did very well. Can't wait to get back up next time. We caught a bunch of crappies, some walleyes, and a big pike! We did have some help from Kelly and Jon though.

You want a boohooo? OOOOOhhhhh booohooooo I am not enough of a man to respect other peoples oponions. There is fresh blood in the water and all of the internet tough guys are going to take out the fact that they are probably picked on thier whole life and this is thier opportunity to pick on someone, finally. Did some of you guys dig the lake and fill it with water and fish, because you act like this is your own lake. Are you that insecure in your fishing abilitys and other areas of your life(ahem) that you can't even read a little critism about a public body of water???

Man, don't take everything so personal. I can understand the people with business ties to the lake not liking a bad report but the rest of you must be a bunch of teenage whinners, grow up and learn to take a little critism about a PUBLIC PLACE.

Boy, talk about pi$$ and whine. Ya don't get onto fish? Well, other folks are, but maybe not everybody.

URL is not the Dead Sea, so maybe a review of one's own fishing is in order.

I'm willing to cut the guy some slack. It's a baffling lake at times and can frustrate the best anglers. You can drill 300 holes and still not find them or you can find them in the first hole you punch.

There's a certain degree of luck involved. Guys who work hard and systematicly definitely increase their odds. But someone just going up for the weekend can be humbled in a hurry.

URL is a fantastic fishery in my opinion. Easy to find the slabs? No way. But the lake just keeps amazing me with what it produces every year.

For some reason it gets us all worked up one way or another. smile.gif

I don't care what you think about the lake (personally), like the other guys said, less competition. But what fun is driving 10 hours to nearly get skunked if you can't come home and get lipjacked by internet wiseguys. grin.gif

I though that is what you did in your original post. confused.gif I was up the weekend of the 10th and between two of us we caught 9 walleyes and 6 perch in 2 days. Thats why they call it fishing. For me it seems to work out to every other trip we do good and the other can go from bad to just ok but the bottom line is we have fun every trip.

I think I am going to quit deer hunting in Wisconsin because the last time I went I didnt see any deer, what a horrible experience, I had two tags in my pocket and couldnt even fill them in a state that is supposed to be overrun with them.

It is safe to say we've all had our good trips, and we've all had our bad trips. About three years ago, I was having consecutive bad trip after bad trip after bad trip. Last winter I had 1 awesome trip, 1 bad trip, and a number of so-so trips. This winter has been 2 so-so trips, and 1 unbelievably awesome trip. The "success" of the trip is generally determined by the weather patterns around the weekend, which I can't control. I can only fish weekends so I have to take what the weather gives me, it might be good, it might not.

I do know there is one guarantee, and that is if you never fish the lake again, you'll never catch another fish out of the lake. wink.gif You may just sit down on the motherload next time!

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
