Chris, scratch one from the list. frown.gif My son backed out. Apparently teenage girls are more appealing than fishing with dad. Go figure.

I'll still be there, however.

Best trip I've ever made to Red, possibly ever!

I'll get the roll call tallied up here later guys and probably be posting more info as well.

Would love to have you join us. The more the merrier!

The kids are most definitely welcome. In fact, if I can find some hot holes, I'd like to get all of the kids fishing in that area so they can get on a good bite.

I also have an offer from a fellow FMer to do a free crappie mount to whoever catches the biggest crappie. At this time, I want one of the youngsters who catches a big crappie to get the mount! I should have more details on this soon. Stay Tuned!

Remember... Departure time will be at 12 noon from Tall Tales @ Hillman's. Please meet up with us there between 11am & noon, pick up your road fee, bait, other necessities, and we'll be on our way.

I'll be scouting again on Friday as well as Saturday morning before the 'fest. If we can't find something, somethings wrong.

Kid's Contest for Free Crappie Mount!

I've finally got the details ironed out and I'm happy to say that a fellow FM'er, TRM, is willing to donate a Crappie Mount to the Slabfest!

Tyson Mann, or TRM as he's known online, runs Nature Scenes Taxidermy out of East Bethel, MN.

The winner of the mount will be awarded by Me! smile.gif And I am not eligible. frown.gif

I decided immediately that this contest will be for the kids only, so hopefully one of the kids in attendance sticks a big one!

If there is a relatively close tie for largest crappie, I'll throw names in a hat for a random drawing.

Here is a picture of some of TRM's work. They look nice to me!

Thank you Tyson (TRM)!

Gonna be out of Hillman's this weekend. Be with a buddy and his young son on our annual thank you trip for their inviting me to hunt NoDak on grandpa's huge farm. I know Connor will be all over trying to win that crappie mount. Anybody that wants to stop by; cream with charcoal striped house pulled by charcoal GMC crew cab. Flying a white flag with a red triangle but can't say a whole lot more about that on this site without becoming a healthy scratch. grin.gif Not sure exactly where we'll be, I usually go by the seat of my pants. Guaranteed not to be in any type of group. In fact, we may be that speck on the horizon that you're wondering about. Good luck to all this weekend.

Radio channel?

Er ah I may look 40 but I have that premature aging thing so you can hook me up with a good area laugh.gif Not for the mount just the slabs!

Fellow FMr Cheetah and I will be getting there mid morning friday. Leaving the cities around 5.

Alrighty Guys...

I got the list updated best I can. Current tally is purt near 75 people! Thats about triple the attendance from last year if everyone makes it. I'm excited! It should be a fun weekend!

I'll have the Roll Call list with me at Tall Tales and I'd appreciate if everyone could check in. For those of you who haven't made the list yet, by all means, stop in and say hi!

Remember to bring the kids with! We'll have a little contest for a free crappie mount for the kids. No cheating please! Fish must be fresh & flopping when I measure them. smile.gif

Other than that, travel safe everyone and hope to see you up there.

I'm leaving town this evening and will be on the ice in the morning trying to find some crappies for us. The rumor is my spot from last weekend has been invaded so we're starting over again. Guess I should have kept my mouth shut! frown.gif

My cell phone doesn't work up there but I'll have the 2 way radio on Channel 7.

I hope everyone can find there way and meet up, I don't want to leave anyone behind or excluded this year.

I am about ready to get out of here and start my trip. I am going to Fargo tonight and will fishing the trip tomorrow morning. I was pretty cool stopped by Gander Mountain in Fargo tonight to pick up some stuff for the fest and I ran into a college classmate I haven't seen for about 6 years. I wouldn't have met him if it wasn't for needing some stuff for the weekend.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
