I will be off from fishing this weekend, but my buddy and I hit Mille Lacs this past weekend! What a hog bonanza!! In all we caught and released 2 25 inchers, had 2 more 25 + inchers on that we lost halfway up, kept 1 20 incher, kept 2 19 inchers and added a 16 and and 13 to that pile as well in 2 days. The most exciting part of the trip was when I hooked into a 28 + incher at about 6:30 PM the first day there (this past Friday) and he spit the hook right at the hole. My New Years Resolution to catch a 7+ pounder this year would have been smashed easily! (Oh well, it will keep me hungry to keep battlin this year!) We also caught and kept about 6 real nice jumbo perch. I left an extended report over on the Mille Lacs thread, but I thought I'd brag a little bit about the Big Puddle we just hit here! What a lake! This will maybe turn into my favorite lake!

This is my opinion, but the area lakes just don't have the potnetial that Mille Lacs does for the time and time again chance for the big bites! WOW!!!

@-Sahe, my Brother --

I think it will be time to take out the sleds. We know have drivable ditch-banging snow and since it is giong to hit -18 for the High this weekend I am sure the fish will be slow, to say the least.

It may be sled-time this weekend.

My $1.25.

Just learned that someone broke through on Reno last night. He was pulling his 7'x12' fish house with his ATV and dropped the back of his fish house through on 3" out in the middle of the lake. Fortunately, nobody was hurt and he was able to somehow get it retrieved this morning. I guess they had to go over 100' from the front of the ATV to find 10" of ice.

Seeing a lot of greenheads and swans around the metro.  It seems every bit of open water is packed.  I took advantage of some opportunities to film some trumpeters and put a little holiday cheer to it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQu99MI1Y6Y

I found a old trolling motor at a garage sale for like $5-10 bucks, cut the head and motor off of it and used the pole and bracket to clamp on the ducer on my last canoe.

It should be able to I can shoot through my kayak if I wanted. Canoe should be the same. There great units. Good price and a solid fish finder

I just saw this online.  What would be the best way to mount the transducer?  Could it shoot through the floor of the canoe?   Humminbird® PiranhaMax™ 4 Sonar PT Portable tranducer, case, rechargeable battery and charger Tilt-mount base makes the screen easy to view 256-color 4.3" 480 x 272 screen DualBeam explores down to 600 ft. 2,400-watt peak-to-peak power output Featuring a portable transducer, portable case, rechargeable battery and a wall charger, Humminbird's PiranhaMax 4 Sonar with PT delivers a compact package for on-the-go fishing adventures. Anybody know anything about this lake? Just north of Ely.

Welcome Rick! I use a Humminbird piranha max 4 (non DI). I mounted it in a vexilar Genz case and I use the genz soft pack on it to help protect the screen from scratches. I used it all last summer in the kayak and it worked PERFECT. I use the humminbird suction cup mount and it works well. Even used it on a smaller aluminum boat and it never came off even on plane. This setup to me is ideal for anyway wanting a cheaper rig that works very well IMO.

I want to set up the canoe with a portable transducer so that it can be used in the boundary waters and portaged, etc.  Anyone have ideas on the set-up and what sonar would be a good choice?   I probably don't want too hi-tech so I can conserve battery life.
