There is parking all around the lake on either East Lake Harriet Parkway, or West Harriet Lake Blvd...

That's a fun way to catch a pike!

I haven't seen a pike out of Harriet since I started fishing it four years ago. Wonder if the population is starting to rise a little bit or if you just caught one of the 14 pike in the lake. grin.gif

I got one last summer that went almost 10 lbs. Nice fat pig. Only pike I've ever seen on it. we fish muskies there and one would think we'd run into some here and there.

I'll be out there after work today. I think we're going to try the east side. The only two other times I've been on the lake is on the west side last month. If anyone else is out in that area, stop by and say hi. We'll have my black Shappell and my cousin's clam close to it.

Anyone other reports from the last week or two?

Took my daughter out last night (Friday) for the "golden hour" no walleyes for the first time but got into some keeper sized crappies and one really nice perch (just shy of a pound) one other house on the lake have not seen it that empty in weeks. many must of found out what I did, that the walleye bite had slowed way down

Lots of fun on Harriet tonight. We drilled holes in 12', 15' and 18'. We were able to use my buddy's new u/w camera so we took a look down.

Lots of healthy weeds at 12' and pretty thick so we moved out to 15'. As I dropped down the camera I saw a big snout just a couple of feet away. It happened pretty quick so I didn't think it could possibly be a fish, but I turned the camera back and there was a nice muskie staring at me! Absolutely incredible.

It was like viewing a shark in a tank. It was very curious of the camera (bluegill style), moving in and out and at one point it was just a couple of inches away from the camera, but it never tried to eat it.

Absolutely beautiful fish and quite thick. Guessing it was a lower 40" fish. We watched it for a good couple of minutes. We tried to take a picture of the screen, but then we lost him.

As for the 15' spot, on one side of the hole we had a weed edge and on the other side the weeds stopped and it turned to a gravel mix. We thought it'd be pretty good.

We hit the crappies pretty well, a couple of 9", but the rest were the typical 7-8" fish. Caught about 20. They started around 6pm, went cold from 7:10-7:30, then slow n steady until 8 which surprised me.

No walleyes which I thought was surprising since we were on a transition spot. Tried a variety of presentations for them, but no takers.

Fish wanted a green glow jig w/ either waxies or crappie minnows. A red glow jig caught only a couple. We were able to get most of those we saw on the flasher to bite. They would rise a good couple of feet to hit it.

What type of structure are the walleyes relating to? I thought we had a good spot and we had 23' of water fairly close by.

All I know is that I have had a lot of fun on Harriet this year. I have been out there 6 different times and have caught a good number of fish each time out. When the temperature has been steady a few days in a row, there has been a very good perch bite. Little frostie spoons and waxies or a pink/white Delong jig and waxies. I haven't caught one over 10 inches but the action is fun on a Thorne Bros noodle rod.

Walleyes have been decent. The biggest I've gotten was a 22 incher. Other than that exception, nothing bigger than 12 inches.

I guess I have been surprised by the Crappies. The crappies seem to come in around 5:30 to 6:30pm. Not a lot of numbers but decent size. They have been taking my #3 swedish pimple with a minnow head.

I have fished the entire time on the west side just touching the weeds in 15 to 16 feet. My favorite part is it is only a 25 yard drag of my house to the spot. This is an inside turn. I have wanted to fish down by the beach because I have seen guys walking way out from the beach. Tough to leave my spot.

I have always been curious to know what the guys catch up by boat landing. It has to be sunnies but I don't know.

I'm in a Fish Trap Guide. A FMer stopped by a couple of weekends ago but I have forgotten his name. I hope to be out on the lake saturday or at least next week.

I have found a lake that has kind of cured from running to Mille Lacs every chance I get in the winter.

Walleye71,

As far as the beach goes. I think most people up there are fishing for crappies. Its a pretty hammered spot. Not a bad location for muskies too. I'm sure the occasional walleye can be caught there as well. But like I said, mostly crappies. To be honest, unless you like the crowds, I'd just keep fishing where you are. Why move when it seems like you are enjoying your current spot....unless of course you're looking for company. Good luck out there.

There are some very good spots off the beach - not right there, but on the south side, that have a lot of crappie, sunnies, perch & the standard small Harriet walleyes. "My" spot that I've been haunting for the past few years always holds at least a few of these, & there's rarely anyone within shouting distance, although the last time out I did see some holes drilled in the area. It appears that the south side gets a lot less pressure than the west/east sides points, which I've never ventured to. Any way you cut if Harriet's a nice lake in the middle of the city & can be a tough bite, too.

I have yet to crack the "nice" walleye bite out there, but I usually go to Harriet when I want to C&R a bunch of decent sized crappie. Maybe someday I'll put in some serious time out there to try to find the little buggers since everyone knows they're in there...somewhere.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
