I have a question for those of you who fish "fish lake" on a regular basis. I was talking to an older gentleman and I told him I was going to fish lake saturday. His advice was fish somewhat close to shore by the dam and you will catch walleyes. Is that good advice, can I icefish close to the dam? I have never been there before.

SurfaceTension: Of coarse I'll be there with Jr. Looks like cold temps all week and a warm up on Saturday. Wheelers and sleds should be good to go so we can spread out. Stay clear from in front of the Damm and bridge.

Looks like I'll be able to make it out also.

Steve, what time does Tim open up the shop for bait, etc?

I need to take off mid-afternoon so thought i would try to catch the early bite. Will probably bring the sled, and definitely something to throw on the grill for lunch.

Stay away from the d a m ! You can catch walleyes all over the lake in a lot safer spots. People do fish the rocky shoreline to the right of the d a m. Getting there by ice isnt fun and you have to walk in front of the d a m. Thats a no no.

Try the narrows area or Crappie Village area as well as airplane island. Or if you insist on fishing off the public landing then stay to your left of the d a m.

Bad news frown.gif Found out last night that both kids have basketball games on Saturday. The boy has two of them in Barnum that day. Does not look good for us. Trying to look at other options, probably a no go. Steve, if you find the fish bros give them to Frank and he can get them to me. I will have to take the boy out on Sunday when we have nothing going on. Bummer man. BC

Gary,

I don't know what to tell you. That's the same address I sent the e-mail to and it didn't go through.

Northlander or LoonASea,

If you would like to try and e-mail ripstick for me that would be great. If so please send him my cell number and home e-mail address and I'll see if that works and then I'll try to reply back to him.

Thanks guys,

Tom (BD110)

Tearin Lips,

I am planning on being at Tim's at 7 for bait, and should have a sled with me (trailer is in the shop but should be out tomorrow) if you need a ride out.

Big Country, I am planning on heading out on Chub (if i can get an ice up date) on sunday morning with my little guy (4yo). Where were you planning on trying on sunday? Maybe we could get together, kids always seem to have more fun when there's other kids around, and it looks like its gonna be a pretty nice day to be on the ice. I'm not locked into Chub, wouldnt mind trying grand, caribou etc. either.

Someone needs to keep me updated by phone on Saturday if there are any plans made for Sunday. I'm not able to get on the site at work, so I will not have a clue if Sunday plans are made.

I'm ready for a tip-up party on my favorite body of water!!!

Sound like a good Sunday plan??

Take care,

xplorer,

that might not be a bad idea, I might be out there earlier too...I am not sure yet. I have to work saturday afternoon, so that puts a damper on the afternoon deal. Me and a buddy are heading out and going to try the crappie village area on friday afternoon. My dad is bringing down the rest of my stuff tonight, so I will be set. Keep me posted

Thanks and Take Care!!!

Xplorer, change of plans. The boy and I are going to Grand Saturday after the game, around 2:30pm and fishing into the evening. Sunday is full already. Come along if you can. My boy is 10 and has been ice fishing since 4 also. Let me know. Tom, we will get you the goose meat somehow soon. Good luck and have fun. Take pictures if Frank starts to do "The Funky Chicken" shocked.gif BC

I have a 4x8 trailer I could bring along if someone wants to pull it with their wheeler to haul people and gear. Next year I am hoping to have a wheeler to put on it and bring along to these events.

I have to get out of the house Saturday (While the wife bakes christmas cookies.. grin.gif) and was pondering the thought of getting in on one of these ice events. Was thinking about pulling the sleds and the otter up, and giving it a shot, but have never fished fished lake, I don't even know how to get to it. Would have no idea where to go, what to use...... sticking close to a local lake for an early crappie, walleye bit is tempting too..... trying to make up my mind. the thought of driving back, would put a damper on the choice of beverage. Undecided as of yet.

Dave come on up and bring the sleds. I could use one to tow my house and get ya on the "secret spots".

Maybe Tim can get ya in a cabin for the night. E-mail me if ya want to do that cuzz I will need to know asap. I would even spend the night then.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
