Terry's Boat Harbor

Cjac if she shows up again I'll let you know because I couldn't get her to hit anything in my tackle box.

That spot is community and then some. I counted six boats working that stretch Friday night with another two waiting to get in line. I was a little further east because that's where we found the baitfish and caught some nice fish away from all that traffic. Traffic moves the bait which moves the predators but they don't go too far. My rule is fish the bait fish not the spot.

Heck,

Paul won't even tell ME his spots. If he does give out a spot you can rest assured plenty of folks already know about it.

Let's face, folks flock to where thery see others fishing.

I never knew Paul fished that community spot by Terry's but I sure have known about that spot for a long time.

I do know another honey hole Paul took me to but I want to live so I will say no more smile.gif

I find giving the exact locations of fishing spots goes against the whole history and charm of angling. I put in a lot of time on Tonka/Mille Lacs and do hold my findings close to heart. I’m not a guide, heaven forbid, I just log many hours fishing and enjoying the fact I’m probably catching more than the next guy.

The idea of promoting fishing to anyone besides my kids seems ridiculous. Do we really need to promote fishing in MN? Sorry to say that there are to many anglers on our fisheries, to many tournaments on our lakes, to many people pre-fishing tournaments and to many $50K boats trying to drag race their way to a pay check at my kids expense.

I read your posts weekly and have even seen some of you posters on the water(Tonka). I find your posts somewhat informative, unassuming and vague... the way it should be. I guess I don’t feel the bravado of posting fish size, numbers, presentations, etc … but least of all locations. I’ll take and share with my friends all my spots for one reason. They appreciate the fact that there’s a good chance that I’ll put them on a few fish. If they posted this info anywhere, I’d have a little sit down with them… then let em buy me a cold one.

There are so many holes, off based opinions and undertones to this post that I don't not even know where to begin. It is very contradicting from beginning to end.

Six months a member, single digit posts and read weekly confused.gif Sounds like there is a lot of information gathering on your end but an unwillingness to share. Remoind me, wasn't this part of the charm?

We post pics because it is fun!! I think a majority of us like to look at images of fish people catch and release, it is not about bravado for the majority. In the muskie circles it has been deemed MuskiePorn. A teaser.

Presentation posting is bravado? Its called sharing. Why else would thousands of people be coming to this website? Communicating, which involves sharing ideas, thoughts, maybe even techniques. No one says you have to sing like a bird on this site, I personally don't myself. But just because I give a pattern does not mean that everyone can replicate it with the same results.

Maybe its a difference in mentality also. I am 99% catch and release. Maybe I am naive, but many of the fishing I do is for species that are deemed sport fish by the majority. I therefore have a little less problem sharing techiniques and general locations.

We do need to promote fishing in MN, especially ethical and fair fishing, abiding by state laws and regulations. Lets teach the youth so that they can also enjoy fishing for future generations. Too many anglers? Too many tournaments? Too many 50K boats???

Please enlighten me, I must be missing something.

I have learned a lot from this website and others and from personal conversations with the members. I can personally say I have become a lot better fisherman from viewing the posts of many. Each of us have our own way of sharing our experiences which to me makes this website a great one. One of the guys I have spoken to is Paul W, who didn't know me from Adam last year (except for my website posts) and shared and exchanged fishing spots, lures and techniques with me over the phone last year. That is what this site is all about, in my mind.

I echo your comments. I am fairly new to this. I haven't met any of you, but this is a great place to get information, and learn. Thanks everyone!!! I would like to pick your brain and get more info on the Fall Crank bite on the Pond. I have never done this!!

Lots of Luck,

Excellent post! I could have not responded to my post any better. I knew I’d get corrected and am not sorry for expressing my opinion. That’s not my total opinion just the “jaded side of me” opinion. I share pretty much all my successes and failures with anybody I converse with at the local bait shop. I just think it is a bad idea to post exact fishing locations anywhere on the Internet… especially on a website of this magnitude.

As far as promoting fishing in MN: You nailed it right on the head. Ethics man… Ecthics! This last year my nine year old has seen the light on catch & release. I even overheard him counseling his nine-year-old cousin on C/R. It was kind of a proud moment for me… he’s a nice kid.

Regarding my comments about tournaments, pre-fishing, and 50k bass boats screaming across the water… oops did I say “bass boats”? I’m not sure of the cost but a 300hp pony on the back of those rigs aint cheap. I don’t like them and neither does my son.

I agree with you about the expensive boats. I have seen it many times. Just because a guy has a big expensive boat, it does not automatically mean he knows what he is doing. Neither do stickers! wink.gif There have been many times, when some rich boy is out there getting schooled by the good old boys in the smaller aluminum boats. Just because you don't own a big glass boat, doesn't mean you aren't a better stick than the guy with the bigrig.

Some of my best memories are of guys in those big spendy units sitting there watching us or others in our little 16 foots and 60 horses putting on a clinic for them. tongue.gif

Lots:

pjk has several hundred posts on FM.com, through new and reset accounts. That's more than you show at the moment, though he'd hesitate to say so, I imagine. Needless to say that's a lot longer than six months aboard.

He makes good points, especially about Tonka, which has the largest average boat size on any lake in Minnesota. (though clearly that's not all fishing boats.) For operators of small boats, as he is, that's a steadily increasing index of real danger. For people of limited means, as he is, there's no alternative but to avoid the lake as dangerous. The shame of it is the end result of years of hard work and careful attention to detail yields success that he can't make use of, and renders his forty year old boat, lovingly maintained, a truly risky choice.

PJK will continue to fish Tonka I'm sure; the big fish there are pretty attractive. It seems reasonable to me to complain about the fishing boat arms race.

In case you wonder why he isn't posting these thoughts himself: he can't. For his remarks before, he was banned. I may be too. Enjoy; this post will likely not last long.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
