Fifth Annual Burntside Bash!

Recommended Posts

Powerstroke,

You are more than welcome to ride up with me. I'll be leaving from the cities a little after noon on Friday and coming back Sunday night. I have to stop in Duluth and pick up my son when he gets out of school. I would have room on the trailer for your house and such. Can't help you with the lodging though, as my room is full frown.gif. I have Rick, his son, my son and myself already in our room.

Paul, you mean to tell me no one is sleeping on the bathroom floor, and you consider that full? Man, we're all getting old. They don't call it the Adventure Inn for nothing. grin.gif

Looks like me and HarveyLee are gonna be making the pilgramige. I can't wait!!!

To be honest I woulda just winter camped if I had no other choice, but this way will be way more fun. I plan on trying to do another BWCA style winter camp this year so I'll have to discuss it with you Up-Nort folks at the bash.

Powerstroke, Good to hear you and HarveyLee will be making it up. I winter camp during the outside B-Dub opener. The use of sleds affords us to go in heavy but have done it the light way inside the BWCA.

I really want to try something like that. We'll have to chat when I get up there.

This post is starting to get to me now. Is this still on for Jan 27th ? I have never done lakers through the ice, but I sure would like to try it. Anybody know if there would bee any type of rooms available near bye ? I know it is late but now seriously thinking about it. If anybody has any info about a place to stay close by, I have a trailer for my sleds, and a portable, so a short drive would be ok. chime in so I can call and make a reservation.

Viking,

Yes it's still on and it is going to be a great time. For lodging I know that as of a couple of days ago the Marjo Motel had some rooms left. They are very reasonable and within 15 minutes of where we will be.

I'm sure Frank can get you on a good spot.

Dave does that mean you have a sled for me to use? grin.gif

With a sled (provided we get snow) you can go most good spots if not all.

Drop me a e-mail.

Steve, that may be a possibility, I will shoot you an email after I talk to Jr. I have to see if he wants to go. It is a long drive up from here. I need the company. He has a couple sleds also, But I only have a double trailer. They are are all old triples. I saw you drive a polaris a couple of weeks ago.....

You know you have to get them triples up to 90 once in a while to keep them burning good. Mine are due... hahaha I will shoot you an email during the week.

End of the Line,

Thanks for the invite for the bash. Unfortunelty, I will have to give up my bunk spot to the next alternate. I will be attending, only with a few other people. So rather than all of us cramimg into 1 bunk, we are staying on Vermillion that weekend. We plan to fish out of portables Sat. and Sunday. I'm starting to wonder about this winter weather...I hope we have good enough ice to explore areas of burntside with sleds. Do you know what access everyone is planning on using? (I'm hoping VanVac as that is about a 20 minute drive from where we are staying.) Thanks again for the invite and I'll see you on the ice.

ps. I hear LOW is slamming and they have 12+ inches of solid ice. I suppose your house will go from b-side to there huh?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
