I was up to Knife Lake this weekend. I see someone had wrecked their canoe on the rapids flowing from Melon into Carp lake on the rocks. Canoe was half submerged and bent in half around a big rock in the middle of the river. Not sure when it happened because it was there on our way up and still there this morning. Hopefully nobody got hurt. I guess when they say "dont try this at home, kids" they mean it. "Shooting" the rapids can be dangerous if you dont know what lies ahead.

Never "shoot" the rapids in the wilderness. If your boat gets wrecked, you're screwed.

When I was a much younger ***** than I am now, we tried shooting a rapids in the BW.
Not smart. At one point, the canoe started to go sideways after bumping a rock, so I jumped out without tipping the canoe, and acted as a "body rudder" the rest of the way down the stream. It worked that time, but what a ***** I was that day......DO NOT TRY THIS.
Sure, I can laugh about it now, but at least I'm warm and dry now.

I have two buddies who tipped their canoe this past weekend on a trout lake off of the Gunflint. Both are alright. Lost some gear. The disturbing part is that two people in a fishing boat saw them in the water and then on shore and did nothing to help. By the way, one of the witnesses is a VERY well known local fisherman. Nice......

Jason,

That is really terrible. You should post the guy's name on here so if anyone knows him they can tell him to get with the program. Fishing is not that important to not help those in need.
