Smallies on St. Louis

I'm a newbie on the St. Louis and to be frank I'm intimidated. I would like to fish for S M Bass but don't have a clue as to where in the river I should go and what baits to use. Any tips would really be appreciated. Also, does a Wisconsin license cover the Minn side if I put in a launch in 'sconie?

Mn license is good for the whole river. As far as smallies Im catching them in shallow rock and wood. Today it was on a slip bobber , jig and leech in my rockbass spots. Try the middle east side of spirit lake in the timber with top waters. Hang on! Also the pilings anyplace are usually good. Thats except on league nights!
