Hey guys, looking to get out wednesday after work to try a little smallmouth fishing in the bay around some of the rock shorelines and piers and pileings around the elevators, and was wondering if they are down this way yet or would it be better to try a little further up?
It has been a busy summer so far, haven't been on for awhile, hope everyone's having agreat time, later!

Yes the smallies are definetly biting anywhere down there. I've caught several along just about any rocky shoreline. I caught a 19" 4lbr in the pilings above the bong bridge a couple weeks ago. A real horse. Awesome fish. Beetle Spins work great of small spinnerbaits.

I think you'll find fish! I can't give out all my hot spots but I do know that smallies are active in the lower bay. Rocky, pilings, etc. I took one last night off the old Interstate bridge fishing pier, right among all the old pilings.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated! Need to blow off a little steam, no better way than to have a smallie show ya who's boss on the water!

Burner you will find them all over right now. It just seems like they are there today gone tomorrow. But of course our weather is finally stabilizing so this should really help. Its doing wonders for the eyes.

Quick question guys. I tried fishing for the smallies a couple times later last summer. I had no luck up river, but did find a few in the lower section. It's such a huge piece of water it's hard to know where to start. Do most of the smallies move to the lower part of the river during the second half of the summer, or do some fish still stay up river all summer? I'm struggling a bit to know where to start???

I know a guy who fished the gander pro-am on the river two years ago, and found them in some of the back bays one day and gone the next. I belive they are like a wolf pack, and constantly roam and follow the bait fish, I also belive they can be there and shut off in general, just my thoughts?

Anyone have any thoughts on a good starting point, was thinking about the shoreline around northstar steel or possibly the bay that cuts in towards the papermill-hibbard station, have a couple other ideas also but always looking for input, my email is listed below if ya want to give up any good ones.

My brothe rworks at northstar steel, guys down ther tend to do pretty good on both eyes and bass slip bobbering off of the warm water discharge early in the year, it might be getting mucky in those waters by now though...leeches.

We have been catching some nice smallies on the Minnesota/bong side of the train trestle. Especially the wood and the rock point down the line more towards Duluth.

Wormburner:
You are going to find smallies in the areas you are thinking of. Again, look for the rocks, pilings, and structure. Smallies like to hug the shore. Also, try over by Billings Park, lots of rip rap to try.

I have targeted a some smallies a few times at the river while fishing for muskies, The bass I have caught have all been small, Is it a early/late bite for the nicer fish, All the fish I have caught have been scattered which is suprizeing to me. Anybody get largemouth in the bays, it looks like good largemouth habbit, if so any size.

went out again today for bass and got about 10, 2 were decent and the rest are small, Are the bigger ones up river, or I thinking that the bigger fish are not relating to the shoreline during the day, ANybody getting anything over 3 lbs. haven't seen one yet.

On the South Shore...  There is still some good ice fishing to take advantage of if you still have that itch and want to ice some walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, maybe an eelpout and certainly big pike.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st.  Some resorts have called it a season, but other resorts still have fish houses out, are still fishing and have availability.     Fishing reports have been good.  Numbers of walleyes, saugers and perch.  Using electronics is super helpful with some larger walleyes swimming through suspended.    It was a great week of pike fishing for most.  Good numbers of fish and some big fish tipping that 40 inch mark coming topside.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom has been effective.  Most pike anglers are fishing in depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen from Nelson Park at Birchdale, MN (30 miles east of Baudette) and to the west, which is where most anglers spring fish.  The ice is showing signs of deteriorating in places.  The river is open water about 20 miles east of Birchdale near Loman.  Things are happening.   A good reminder, as of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.   Sturgeon fishing.  Once the open water appears, sturgeon are active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th. Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle.  There is still some ice fishing happening with some, and others have called it a season.  Call ahead if you have that itch for one last ice fishing trip.   Walleyes, saugers, perch, crappies and pike are in good numbers.   The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well.  You can fish for sturgeon through May 15th.

It's that time of year again. What are your predictions for ice out this year?   I'll guess exactly one month from today - April 18th. Fishing opener is a little earlier this year so hopefully we aren't running up against the clock.

Ya know I typically don't cruise through Inger too often. Still looking for a plastic, orthopedic or cardiothoracic surgeon so I can be a stay at home husband and catch walleye every day. Not a whole lot of those in this neck of the woods 😆
