Just got back from fishing the big lake, the weather was beautifull, the fishing was pretty slow. Caught 3 Lakers Saturday. No pattern. Caught 1 one a green fastrac, planer board, and 2 on riggers at about 55 feet. One on watermelon, and one on a monkey puke.

Wow..what a beautful day today. Few rain showers here and there but nice day overall. We had a good morning fishing. Picked up 8 total...6 lakers and 1 king and 1 coho. Everything but the coho was caught on the riggers and pretty much at the same depths. Did well last Thursday, too. Fishing seems to be picking up.

Got out on Saturday as well over in the WI side. Caught 7 laker's in the afternoon as we did not get out till three. Worked 80-100 FOW with green/yellow/orange ripsticks doing well for us. Black & green, & pink fishbone on Rigger's @ 55' Beautiful day out indeed. Viking look in front of your boat on H dock we are in the Bayliner with the flybridge between the "fishin Finn" & the pursuit. Like to share some sasparilla's with ya some time.

Also managed to get out for a few hours yesterday on the MN side. Didnt get out til 11, then promptly got a "boarding" check from the CG before i could even get a line set. 15 minutes later with cert. in hand, set dipseys. Picked up one 4# laker in 100' on purple/pink flashback at @35 down. Then lost another on same behind boat. Decided to head back to harbor when a couple large downpours headed our way. Hit one last coho on the dipsey/firetiger flashback on the way in. Went in and hit the river upstream (bouy 62) and caught a 36" sturgeon but no eye's.

Cheffery, I will be up Friday Morning, feel free to stop by. I always enjoy meeting fellow FM'ers. Hope to see ya this weekend. I thought Northlander would have stopped by to say hell-o. I haven't heard from him in a while. Could Mrs. Northlander have tightend the Cinche ?

Unfortunately I won't be out this weekend, my work schedule is sporadic with weekends usually being the busiest. I will continue to look out for you when I'm down there. If you hear calls from the "B.S." (my boat) or my brothers boat in front of you the "One Eye Open" see if Cheffrey is aboard or by my real name Tom. We'll share colors. As far as Northlander is he is a hard guy to find with his new boat, must have alot of dues to pay to the misses. If you give him enough BS he'll be bound to come out. Speaking of which we shoud get a FM get together set up to get some inlanders out on the Gitch. I have room for 4, any takers?

Viking I have stopped by your place several times but your either out fishing or not around. I have Fri and Sat off. We should HOOK up. Post and I will check ya out. If nothing else we can enjoy a couple "Drinky Poo"s" with Cheffrey.

I'm in. I can take my boat or jump in someones. Name a date.

Posted

I will take a look at my calendar and set a date, probally be on a Sunday, or maybe a Sat. warm up event. Where do you all want to start out at, I pretty much only fish the WI side and don't expect everyone to have WI license.

Posted

I'm a newbie to this board but I can take a couple or tag along depending on the date. I pretty much stick to MN side but do have Sconi lic as well.

Gonna hit the Northshore this afternoon. Looks like we r gonna have to stick kinda close to shore with the winds blowing the way they are. Any suggestions on where and what depths could produce for us. Looks like the surface temps around the Lester should be good for Lake Trout according to that Coastwatch surface tempp site

I'm planning on comming up saturday with some buddies to fish for some lakers and salmon. Anybody getting any fish out on the big lake lately or is it spotty?

Posted

We did well last Sun am and then again on Tuesday. Most everything coming on the riggers at depths of 25 to 50 feet down and then also some right on bottom in deeper water. Hope that helps. I should be out tomorrow myself.

Man, what a beautiful day on the pond. The old man and I fished the south shore today from 9:00am to 3:00 pm. We stayed in 50ft and less trying to find a big walleye. We ended up catching 9 lake trout, 1 king, 1 steelhead and 1 walleye. Half the fish were on really bright sticks and the others were on the downrigger with a spoon. I was surprised to see the water temps that cool up close.

Indeed it was a beautiful day out on superior today. I went up with two buddies and I got 2 lakers about 5lbs, and my buddies each missed 1 a piece. We started out in 100' and had a few hits, then nothing so we moved way up the shore looking for a temp break. We couldn't fond a good one though, we saw the big raft of charters and heard a few were caught on the radio, but we saw no nets flying.

We were in 57 degrees most of the time but found water as cool as 54 on the surface way out. The water temps were around 44 degrees on the bottom in 100'. I am going to try to get up again some time this week for another try.

Outdoor Raan...what was the surface temp that day in close?

We were out yesterday and went out of the Superior entry. Went out about 6 miles but couldn't find temps I was lookin fo. Motored over to the north shore and temps weren't much different. Ended up going further north fishing between Lakeview Castle and Knife River. After about an hour of cruising, finally got the lines down and did fairly well on lakers, a coho, and 1 king. Surface temps 47-49 and fish caught on both boards an riggers from 20-50 feet. No real pattern.

I must have just been too far out from the shore on sat. The water was pretty much the same a couple miles out of duluth all the way twords the knife river for me. I prob. should have gotten closer than a couple miles to the mn shore. Problem was that I was fishing with a couple buddys that don't have much patience when they aren't getting fish all the time. They just wanted to drop lines troll anywhere and leave if nothing hits.

Its hard to find a good fishing partner that wants to put in the effort you do to catch some quality fish. They just want to fish bankers hours, you guys know what I mean!

I agree, I like fishing with a person, that is constanly changing baits. I have a few hundres to choose from, and I get agitiated a alot of times, and have to come down and change them myself. I hate pulling up a small laker that has been dragged for an hour. Isn't part of the idea of fishing, trying to be smarter than the fish ? I don't like having to hollar down from the bridge, change em up. I someties have to keep running down, changing, adjusting depths, Especially when there has been no pattern so far this year. But everyone likes to try fishing the big lake. Sometimes they hit, sometimes they don't. Look in your tackle box. How much stuff do you have in there ? Try it all.

Posted

We started in around 52 degrees (clear water) with no luck. So we moved up into some darker water that was 54 to 57 degrees and bam there they were. Its weird last time out it was the opposite, they were in the cooler clear water. Viking I hear ya, I'm changing baits so fast my dad gives me a hard time about giving them time to work. I have to be doing something.

Posted

Black Max I think thats part of the reason I wind up fishing more by myself. I want to go when I want to go.

Posted

Boy, you guys hit that right on the head. One guy with me last weekend said that I had too much tackle and too many choices to choose from!!! I just looked at him like what the h#*^ are you talking about, and explained that a good variety of baits are needed and that some days the fish may be hitting only 1 color or particular bait. If you only have 1 lure in that color or pattern you may not get many fish that day.

I've got about 200 trolling spoons and a good variety of stickbaits and other needed tackle for fishing the great lakes. Most of my friends call it excessive, I think I'm just prepared. Guess I should start shopping around for some new fishing buddies who like fishing as much as I do.

Posted

Hello Cabin are ya out there?

Posted

You can never have to much tackle. Seems like I can't go into a bait store without buying more stick baits. I wonder how them fish know which color you only have one of.

Posted

Got out a few hours yesterday afternoon but found the fishing pretty slow. Went 2-4 with a king and a laker in the boat and two sore lipped fish still in the lake. Both fish hit 60 over 90 with a 100 foot setback off the ball in temps around 53. Nothing on the surface and nothing on the dipsey's. I was marking fish throughout the column but the active fish seemed to be deeper. There were a lot of 'eye skins in the dumpster at Loon's Foot but don't know if they were lake or river fish. To the earlier point on having enough tackle, all hits came on an odd white/green spoon that I only had one of. Imagine that.
