I'll be entering the BW through the Moose River North on July 19. I am a chaperone (if you can call it that on a BW trip) for a a youth group of about 17 high schoolers. Anyhow, I'm just wondering if any of you can give me some info on the area. I'm fairly certain we will be base camping either on Nina-Moose Lake or Agnes. Would you recommend one of these lakes over the other as far as nice campsites? fishing? Personally, I'm interested in chasing big pike, but I want to make sure the kids have a good time, and I know that fishing for big pike can demand a lot of patience, so where would you go for some fast action?

Head to Agnes. #1- more choice campsites to choose from, being that you have such a large group remember the 9 person rule. #2- fishing in my mind is better on Agnes. Just a portage away from Tiger Bay on Lac La Croix which is excellent for smallies, but Agnes is a good lake overall.
If your group has done little or no portaging before, the first couple of portages out of the landing are a bit tricky to navigate into the landing, especially with the number of canoes you will have.
Overall-- one of my favorite entry points
Keep your line tight.

Thanks Mudcutter,
I'll keep that in mind about Agnes. I see Nina-Moose is a very shallow lake after looking at the DNR survey. It sounds like a good lake to look for moose, but not one that I would want to spend a week on. Thanks again.

Keep in mind that your maximum group size is 9, so your group had better not be having any chance encounters at camp sites, portages or the like. The Forest Service has been pretty aggressive in enforcing this rule.
You can find fish on both lakes, but I think Agnes is prettier, and you have some day trip options such as Oyster, Ramshead and Boulder Bay. This is a popular route, so you will be seeing other people, many of whom will be base-camping (especially on Agnes). Make sure you locate and grab your campsites early in the day.

Now I know where not to be during the 3rd week of july.
Have you thought about seperating the groups between two lakes? You will have to trave seperatly ( as noted before 'rule of 9' ) anyhow. Get the highschoolers who want to push & tell them all about the border lakes, read a 'lil Sig O. so a group will get motivated to see Canada. Then you have worked yourself into a sweet border fishing experiance. When outdoor programing with teenagers remember this phrase:
-Work 'em hard, Feed 'em well & program ALL of their time.-
