Tonka Walleye Bite

Recommended Posts

schr0563,

Those are some beauties!! Thanks for sharing the pictures.

I have not been able to get out since my post, thanks for the additional influence of wanting to get back out on the water even more.

No doubt these fish have plenty of forage!! Piggies.

had one saturday chase a phantom (was musky fishing for those of u who do not know) thing was a pig! right at sunset off a rocky point in about 11 ft of water casting into about 2. she was well over the 10lb mark and a easy 30+ incher. took a swing about 10 feet from the boat and her mouth was so large i thought musky - swung again boatside and also gave me a nice belly roll. boat partner and i were both amazed when she turned out to be a walleye. wish she did not miss both times. i am no bull-snitter and have seen my fair share of sumo walleyes. by far the biggest i have ever seen girth and length wise.

Looks like we might be out Saturday evening looking to troll up Waldos again.

Anyone been out lately? Water temps?

Went out Saturday night, I managed to catch and release a beautiful 27.5" fish. Fish came within the first 15 minutes of when we began trolling. We thought we were in for a treat with the calm water, full moon and mild temps. Did not get a sniff of a fish the rest of the evening. Oh well, what a beauty of an evening to be out.

Water temps were 41.5 to 42 degrees.

I got out Friday and Sunday evenings. We got 10 walleyes both nights in the 13-18 inch range. Both nights we started fishing lighted bobbers and pulled in several fish before switching to cranks in hopes of getting a bigger fish. The 18 inchers were the best we could do. I hope to get out a couple more times because those big girls have to eat sometime.

I picked up two bruisers, one a hair over 28" and one 27.5" on lindy with a shiner in 16-20. It made all of those fishless nights worth it! I cannot believe the girth on these fish. Still could not catch a fish on a crank to save my life. Water temp ranged from 47.2 to 45. Should be out again tonight.

I updated my report with some pics of the 27.5", were yours similar in build? They have some big shoulders! HAppnhook we tried a little deeper this time, after the top of the break was not producing, but we didn't find anything deeper either. Only regret was the speed we were trolling, I think we may have been going a little quick this time with the decrease in water temps.

Speed needs to be under 1.5mph and most likely under 1mph. They won't be chasing those cranks too hard so slow it down. Of course this warm spell might kick up the temps so who knows. I would start slow and if the fish hit while making an outside turn you can speed up some. Inside turn means slow it down. Hard to get htis right if you aren't getting any fish tongue.gif

Pretty much the same fish and the 27.5 had a thick mid and tail section. Water temps last night ranged from 45 to 42.5 with no takers.

Very surprised just a trickle of reports on Tonka this fall. Slow cranking, no jigging. I don't get out but a few times but want to try for one last outing. Anything to report or suggest to save my time.

I was having my best luck (only luck) jigging and couldn't do much with cranks also I have not tried for wallys in since the Nov.FM period. But they were hitting fast and furious. A 1/16 oz jig with a fatty work best for me. I may give it a try tonite.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
