Be VERY careful in a lease. Most dealer worth their salt will tell you that it is a bad idea. Nothing for your investment. Also you get KILLED on milage over-run. Like .$50-$1 per mile.

I would never lease. Seems like a good idea but ...

Much better to buy a three-year old truck and make payments.

My $1.25.

Be careful. Car sales have not been good for some time due to the amount of people that bought during zero interest.

Some nasty dealers would lease their wife if it meant a sale. crazy.gif

Depending on your situation, a lease may be beneficial, especially if you are a low mileage driver, or like to get into a new car every 3-4 years. Sometimes they allow you to get into a car that you could not otherwise afford. Most people rarely have a time where they don't have a car payment. You may buy a car with a loan that is for 60-72 months but by the time you get close to paying it off, you want a new one or the miles are high enough to where you may not want to pay for a costly repair that may be coming. Point is, analyze your situation and see what fits you best.

By the way, how's the fishing been?

You sound like a banker. wink.gif

Where have you been?

Many reports had you eaten up by a gigantic Crappie.

F-Dog, you are totally right on... I think it would be great to be able to get into a new truck (one that I wouldn't be able to afford if I bought it) every 3-4 years with a lease. I could care less about having to take it back after 3-4 years when the lease runs out because, as you said, by the time you pay off the truck, it will most likely need to be replaced or have a substantial repair (as is the case with my F-150 right now. It probably will need a new engine and that can't be cheap... It makes me say enough is enough and to buy a new truck under a lease or a 3-4 year old one under a loan. Either way, I think it will cost me the same, so why not lease a brand new one?)...

Also, my Dad just bought a new Dodge Mega Cab with a Cummins Deisel and he was telling me that unless you go with a Deisel that will last past the time you pay it off, it really isn't the greatest thing to take out a big loan and at the end of that loan, you will have to scrap the truck... The lease thing is looking more and more attractive to me by the minute. For me, the miles are going to be the issue. I am going to need a good solid truck because I pull my boat all over (especially back and forth to Wisco every once and a while). That's where the miles coud present an issue for me, but again, my Dad was saying that you pay for like 20,000 miles a year. There's no way I'd drive that in a year even with the Wisco trips!

As far as the fishing, I haven't been out in MN for a while, although, last time my buddy and I were out on Pelican, it was dynamite for 10-12 inch eyes..! crazy.gif If you have a day or two, I'd hit up ol Devils Lake if you ask me... Everybody is busy hunting when they should be fishing up there because the eyes are hammerin!

Good Luck to all!

Most leases are for 12k miles a year, if you want 15k, you will pay a little more.

Hit, the big crappie didn't like the way I tasted and spit me out. I haven't been out fishing much, was in ND for Peasant shooting for 3 days last week. I'm going to take the Triton out once more this year, and then it goes into the shop for a tune up, winterizing, and storage. I'll just have to wait until ice fishing to keep on hunting for the 8 lb crappie laugh.gif.

Anyone have the current water temp? I going to try to find a quick walt or two on Friday before hunting.

The roosters have kept me tied up the last few weeks down here in SD. Bird numbers are insane this year.

Thanks

That's so funny because I am thinking about hitting Pelican this Friday as well!! Man, by the time we get there, I can't imagine surface temp being much above 40 - 45 degrees. I could even see it capping over in the next couple weeks...

Where would you go on Friday in Pelican if you were me? Anybody else got any suggestions? I have a nice little walleye hole out at ol' Pelican, but I would be open to new suggestions for new water to try...

Also, to give a truck update - the mechanic had to flush the oil twice because of sludge and replaced some minor small, leaky parts in the whole engine mechanism. It's crazy because now my truck runs like a champ again. The whole question now is whether or not this is a good time for a trade in while it still has a little value left in it!!

Good luck to all still out there toughing it out and fishing!!

Hiya -

Main lake was 42-43 degrees on Sunday. I'm going to be out there some the mon-thurs after deer opener, and I hope I'm not busting ice...

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

Bison-

Actually, I grew up about 4 miles from pelican and have probably only fished it 10 times. I have found good success on smaller lakes and prefer them if I can manage to catch fish there. Lots of good fish in pelican though. I know first hand because a few years ago I boated a 13.25lb walt out of Buck Lake that I know was resident to Pelican!

Thanks for the info guys.

Well, I just went and got bait so I will be ready to blaze out of here by tomorrow for a little Pelican action. It is getting darker out quicker and therefore getting there when sundown happens is a chore!

I can't wait to get after it a little bit... It's been too many days in the office for this guy!

I'll leave a post when I get back. Good luck walleyeguy - I am in a 92 Ranger 690 fisherman (silver and maroon mixed in). I like to go to my fishin hole always which is in the southside of the lake and in the exact middle of the way from the left and right ends of the lake. If you see me, give me a shout out!

Well, as planned, I hit up Pelcian this past Friday. Holy! Was it cold! There was about a 20 mph wind that wipped up and it was about 25 degrees. The boat had a ice covering around it after I got off the lake at 9:00 PM. I arrived at 4:30 PM. The bite was non - existant until about 7:30 when I was eating a little meal I packed (sometimes I like to show the fish how it's done smile.gif) and watching a dead rod I dropped over the side of the boat (with a minnow hooked in the back so it could swim on a green and yellow veg - e -jig). I got a bite that almost took my St. Croix right in the water. It felt like a nice fish, but it got off halfway up. I then proceded to have 5 more fish just like that that I got up only half way. However, a couple of those I had on really felt nice. I then was able to boat a 15 incher and 3 more twelve inchers and that was it. By the end of the night I was switching between casting and jigging and then just a dead rod (bobber) with a plain hook and a minnow hooked in the back so it could swim. This is a real ice fishing type pattern I have always resorted to and I thought, since it felt like ice fishing out anyways, I might as well try some of my ice fishing techniques!!

Anyways, it was getting so cold and I had not seen the old Lady all week, so I left a little early at about 9:00 PM (although, the fish were still pretty active when I left).

One other thing to report on - all the lakes around Pelican were completely capped over. I was worried at first that Pelcian was going to be frozen as well!!

One real last thing, walleyeguy, was that you out there on Friday? I saw one other boat trailer in the parking lot and I thought that might have been you. I'll bet you can vouch for how cold it was too!!

I've got one more Devils trip slated for this Saturday and then it's to storage for the Ranger!! Good Luck to all. Ice fishing is right around the corner!

I am sure they are all opening up again. I wish they would stay frozen.

Should have boat-fished instead of hunted Sunday night.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
