I am going up to Sawbill Lake on June 8th for the first time. We are going to be staying at the Sawbill Outfitters camp ground.
Can anyone give me any background on the Lake or any of the portage lakes adjacent to Sawbill?
Thanks in advance.

Stayed at the campground myself a couple times prior to bw trips. Nice place, quiet, conveinent, and has a small store that has about anything you forgot.
My first solo trip was to Burnt Lake. Two easy portages. One to Smoke, and the other to Burnt. Good fishing lake. Has smallies in it even thou the DNR report suggeests otherwise. Campsites are decent. Other than that--I know Sawbill is good fishing lake- especially the north end in the early and late part of the season. Know a little info on the Grace- Beth- Phoebe area. Where do you plan on heading??/

Thanks info. Mudcutter. All I know is we are just going to stay at the campground there and we are going to portage into Alton Lake. The guy that put the trip together has been up there a number of times and says the walleye fishing is excellent. What he says is we will spend most of our time slip bobber fishing.

From what I hear--- Alton is excellent for pigs, not so hot in numbers. But that was a few years ago from my source. At Sawbill Outfitters Store at the campground, they have pictures of pigs caught outta Alton.
I'd fish those bobbers hard at night.

I used to fish Sawbill and Alton a lot. Alton has never been good for numbers of walleyes for me, or anyone else I have encountered... but quality walleyes.. YES.. probably a 4 lb average over time. Sawbill is loaded with walleyes although the average size is smaller, but eaters can be picked out with the occasional nice fish... big smallies in Sawbill also, just not a ton of them. You can drift with a live bait rig and a leech or crawler just about anywhere on Sawbill, including near the campground and get into walleyes.

Alton is loaded with smallmouth of all shapes and sizes... the water can be gin-clear so jigs on deeper boulders can be a ton of fun.. many 100+ smallie days on Alton.

Thanks Guys, I cannot wait until Thursday! I will post how we did after I get back next Sunday.

was up there in 81, portaged into alton and a group of 2 were portaging back to sawbill, they had a stringer of walleyes, nothing less than 6 pounds, with the largest 10 pounds. they had at least 10 walleyes on the stringer.

now I know why catch and release is so important. now that I look back, what a$$holes.

we just paddled through to the next portage, on the way to phoebe, great trip, we caught some smallmouth going through atlon, but some good 2 to 3 pound eater walleyes on phoebe. good luck.

I think it all helps to create motion and confusion to keep their attention away from the blinds.  The hurricanes seemed pretty important though.  6 of them per spread and moved around dependent on wind direction.  Some tall silo socks mixed in with them too.  Kill hole in the middle with a few decoys clustered over the e call.  That was about 25 yards from the blinds.  7-8 batteries to run everything.  2000 decoys per spread.   I wasn’t the shot caller.  We were taking them at about 40 yards on average but I believe we could’ve gotten a lot of them feet down.  We all remember the single Ross’ that broke off from a group of snows hovering at 100+ yards and took the elevator all the way down to its demise.  The shot was called just before it lit but we were all sure if it was left alone, the audience above would’ve joined.  It was mesmerizing to watch to watch how much they work a spread without flapping their wings much.   These pics were waiting for them to come down closer.  They did.

Never hunted conservation season. Actually get birds feet down or longer shots? I've been running battery operated flappers but does the rotary machine really help?
