Has anybody fished Shagawa this year, heading up this coming weekend for a week. Fished this lake several times and just wondered if the Eyes are still deep or can I pick some up in the shallower bays. Also has the water level come up on the lake it was down last year. Thanks

I fished it this weekend. Water is up from last year. The eyes we found were still deep. No luck at all shallower except on smallies. We had our best luck on Leeches with a plain hook lindy rig. It was windy and hard to drift slow enough to keep it on the bottom. Really needed a drift sock this time. Guess I have a reason to go shopping smile.gif

Gus, thanks for the info, I am hoping with the warmer weather they are forcasting the eyes will shallow up a little bit and the bite will improve. I will post how we did when I get back.

transplant - where are you staying for the week? There are a lot of good spots on Shags to fish, and the DNR says the size this year is very good. Haven't fished it myself, but if you're near the Grand Ely Lodge, go see Bob the Bartender. He should be able to point you to a few spots.

Leaky, thanks for the help, we are staying at the Shagawa Inn in the bay by the forest service hanger. If we have time I'll try and see him before we check in on Saturday.

Have a great time. It's a nice resort with good fishing, and town just a mile or two away. You should be able to catch eyes or northerns right off the docks there in the evenings. The Bettcher's have had that place for years, and know the lake as well as anyone. Let us know how you do.

The best fishing we found was around the islands using leeches rigged with a spinner. Shag is a good lake to fish until August then it turns green. The town of Ely is great to explore on the rainy days, I recommend the wolf museum you can actually get your own real life wolf pic. There are the antique shops, for the wife.
