....Untill we are back in the BWCA. Are there any bugs up there in the Gunflint Trail Area yet? Also, we will put in on Poplar go through the Lizz Lake entry and go almost all the way to Winchell, we are planning on camping on one of those lakes north of Winchell, I think on Hanson Lake. Anyone ever fish for walleyes around here? It looks like a chain of lakes and not very deep, lots of options, should be good, we hope. We lucked out last year and caught all our walleyes right out in front of our campsite on Horshoe, I don't know if we can get that lucky this year. Countin' down the days.

I've made that trip many times. Not the best for senery but theres plenty of eyes. If you make the loop you can fish them all.
Caribou, Horseshoe, Omega and Henson.
Have a good trip.

Don't know the area you are going in to but I do know on Monday the first swarms of mosquito's were starting to appear in our latrine. Good luck...

I am looking at planning a trip up that way for the end of July. Any suggestions? Where would you go? I have never been in on the Gunflint side, only the entry points around Ely.

We didn't have many bugs on Insula last week. A few blackflies showed up on Friday when it warmed up alittle.

Don't kid yourself. They'll be here soon enough. bzzzzzzzzzzzz.

What lakes are good for scenery in this area? We've been to Gaskin, Horshoe, Caribou, Vista, Jump, and everything in between. Just wondering if there is anything we are missing that would be within a days trip by canoe.

Seems to me this is the area that got hit pretty well by those winds a while back.

Chef, thanks for the warning, I am a mosquito magnet for some reason.

S.T. thanks for the advise, Henson was dead, all we caught there were northerns but they fried up the same. Omega was the same story. After a few days we moved camp to Allen and nailed the walleyes right out in front of our campsite. Biggest was 25 3/4". Threw back lots of 15-18"ers because the stringer was too full already. Never made it to Horshoe though, but I know they are in there. Found some sweet campsites on Omega and Winchill for next year too.

I got nailed by the knats and mosquitos but everyone else was fine. Give it a week or two and they will be bad. Lots of stagnant water in the woods.

Hey Farley, we're headed up to Lizz next week as well, thanks for the posts you've put up in the last year, it'll give me a starting point!

One question if you're still haunting the board: did you drag in any live bait (we sometimes bring in leeches) or did you catch the eyes on artificials?

Thanks!

I think it all helps to create motion and confusion to keep their attention away from the blinds.  The hurricanes seemed pretty important though.  6 of them per spread and moved around dependent on wind direction.  Some tall silo socks mixed in with them too.  Kill hole in the middle with a few decoys clustered over the e call.  That was about 25 yards from the blinds.  7-8 batteries to run everything.  2000 decoys per spread.   I wasn’t the shot caller.  We were taking them at about 40 yards on average but I believe we could’ve gotten a lot of them feet down.  We all remember the single Ross’ that broke off from a group of snows hovering at 100+ yards and took the elevator all the way down to its demise.  The shot was called just before it lit but we were all sure if it was left alone, the audience above would’ve joined.  It was mesmerizing to watch to watch how much they work a spread without flapping their wings much.   These pics were waiting for them to come down closer.  They did.

Never hunted conservation season. Actually get birds feet down or longer shots? I've been running battery operated flappers but does the rotary machine really help?
