My wife would like to make a trip to the boundry waters this summer, so here's the problem. I haven't been up there in about 13years, and do not even know where to start looking for accesses, good lakes to fish, or camping spots. We would be canoeing only, would like to fish for walleye's or northerns, and I would like to not have to portage to much the first trip, I want her to see how much fun it is and not get scared away. Can anyone help me out with websites, or place to call for maps or any info to get me started? We'll be coming from the South. Thanks in advance.

Fisher and Mcgenzie are your sources for BW maps, they can be found almost anywhere (Gander Mnt., Cabela's, etc.) the DNR website will give you lake info. (gill nets, depths, some maps) Some of the others should be able to point you in the right direction for Walleye lakes with easier portages. I travel the Gunflint mainly for Lake Trout, but I know there is some very good Walleye and Northern fishing there also.

Do you want to go in out of Ely or the North Shore?

For a first time trip, I'd suggest Brule Lake. Just up the shore to Toffte , then up the hill. Pull into the lot, unload, and go. You can go to the BWCA site , look up any lake, and they will show most all campsites on that given lake. In fact , my son and I are going for 4 days on fathers day weekend. Easy trip , good fishing , and a couple of trout lakes[brookies& rainbows] not to hard to get to. Feel free to e-mail me for more details. [email protected]. Good Luck.

Thanks for the responses. I have a starting point now. Getting some maps sounds like the first thing to do. I really don't have a preference of where we launch our canoe. I'm up for anything.

A good first trip is Lake One. The put in is on the road and the protages are short to Lake Two and Three. There will be a lot of other people around. Another trip is Little Grabbro to Grabbro & Bald Eagle. The portage from the parking lot to Little Grabbro is about 1/2 mile, but it's not all that bad. That is the only portage. Bald Eagle is one of the best lakes I've fished in the BWCA.

My wife doesn't like to camp out, but likes canoeing. We go to Ely and either stay at resort or motel and day trip. We take our own canoe and drive to the lake, but the outfitters can arrange for canoes and trasportation.

Personally, I like the Ely area the best.
