I was hoping to get some help. I'm planning on coming up and fish the river on Friday. One guy had mentioned a walleye tourny? What days is it scheduled for? Also, coming from the south on hwy 53 what is the best landing to use to fish near the hwy 23 bridge? Also, is the 23 bridge the cutoff for the WI/MN border water? So many questions I know. I only get to fish the river about once every other year and want to make sure we get it right. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Tourney does not start until saturday. Landing depends on the size of your boat. If you plan on fishing right up near the 23 bridge you will want to come over into MN and take the Grand ave exit and follow that all the way through Gary to the Boyscout landing which will be on your left before you make the big right curve into Fon Du lac.
If you have a larger boat you make want to use the landing under the high bridge in MN. I will be fishing out of this landing on friday and trying many different spots.

I have a 15ft boat and a 15hp motor, do I have to worry about bottoming out on the river or worry about shallower water hitting logs or rocks? Is it same to fish in a small boat on st louis river? I've never fished the river but it's real close to home and i'd like to try it. Any ideas or help?

Mr. BigEyes (good name) thanks for the info. I have a bigger boat with a 150. I'm not sure the name of the landing I've always used, I take a left off of 53 by Barkers Island (I think its hwy 2) which takes me right down to the landing. If you know which one I'm talking about, how far of a trip up river is it to 23? Is it safe to travel through that whole area? We've caught fish in the area by the Superior landing before, would the fishing be quit a bit better farther up the river?

I know the landing, public access and you pay 3-4 bucks I think. It is very nice. If you want to run up all the way to 23 it is 20 miles from there give or take a little. With your 150 you will be up there in no time at all, just stay within the channel. Best of luck let me know if you have other questions. I will be running out there on friday scouting for the hogs!

Your fine with running a 150hp up the river. I have driven up the river from the harbor all the way up to the 23 bridge and I have a 17.5ft deep v with a 150 and I never bottomed out. Make sure that your in between the markers as your running the river though. I also used boyscout landing once and had no problem launching or recovering my boat. Having done both, I would recommend using boyscout landing if your fishing up the river. It gets to be a long drive from the 53 bridge, esp. if you have to keep slowing down whenever you go by some boats fishing already.

Thanks guys for the info. Looks like I'll be able to make about one trip so I want it to be a good one. The weather looks not so good for Fri-Sun so I might hold off and try again next weekend. How long does the good bit last?

Put in at Fon Du Lac Campground. Its right under the 23 bridge. With your boat you wil have no problem launching there.

I think it all helps to create motion and confusion to keep their attention away from the blinds.  The hurricanes seemed pretty important though.  6 of them per spread and moved around dependent on wind direction.  Some tall silo socks mixed in with them too.  Kill hole in the middle with a few decoys clustered over the e call.  That was about 25 yards from the blinds.  7-8 batteries to run everything.  2000 decoys per spread.   I wasn’t the shot caller.  We were taking them at about 40 yards on average but I believe we could’ve gotten a lot of them feet down.  We all remember the single Ross’ that broke off from a group of snows hovering at 100+ yards and took the elevator all the way down to its demise.  The shot was called just before it lit but we were all sure if it was left alone, the audience above would’ve joined.  It was mesmerizing to watch to watch how much they work a spread without flapping their wings much.   These pics were waiting for them to come down closer.  They did.

Never hunted conservation season. Actually get birds feet down or longer shots? I've been running battery operated flappers but does the rotary machine really help?
